is the ux-50 a good deal now that i can get one for much less? my main uses would be web browsing, and calendar/contacts apps.
and would i still need the code diver app now that companies have had time to add landscape viewing to software?

The UX50 is an excellent unit and is certainly worthwhile at discounted prices.
Some apps will still need Code Diver, if they haven't been updated to support the landscape high-res plus display.
