I'm looking to buy a new handheld to upgrade from my handspring visor. I was looking at the IPAQ 1940 and was fairly certain it was the one, however now looking at the Zire 72 it seems to have the same functions excpet that it has a camera, you don't need a headphone jack to listen to mp3 and the battery lasts longer. However the IPAQ has removable battery which would possibly eliminiate that problem. They're both small and light, which I want and everything else seems to be the same in them so which is better? Does it simply come down to which operating system is better, Palm or Windows? Are there just as many third party software applications for both systems? I'd appreciate some guidance by you learned folk. Thanks guys and gals.
The software collections are fairly similiar for both Palm and Pocket PC platforms. Of course, you will always find some app that runs on one but not the other, but all the major apps do support both.
People choose one PDA over another for many reasons. Features vs. your requirements, design vs. functions, power vs. price, etc. We do have an article on Palm vs. Pocket PC: http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/palm_vs_pocketpc.htm however it often comes down to which one you fancy the most. Also, accessory is another area people draw the line based upon. If there are some accessories you must have (case, keyboard, GPS, camera, etc.) that only works with one platform but not the other...
If you haven't, read our reviews of both devices and maybe they will help you choose:
