X30 and X50 and GPS question
      #17604 - 11/24/04 03:56 PM

I currently own a Zire 71. I'm not unhappy with it but would like to move to the next level. I have decided to go with a PPC instead of upgrading to another Palm. I was deciding between a HP/Ipaq or a Dell PPC. I think I have choosen to buy a Dell PDA over the HP for the great reviews and value. I will be using it for addresses and appointments mainly. I also use it for shopping lists, to do lists, DVD and CD lists and for Advantgo. I do view Excel and Word documents occasionally. I also occasionally play mp3's or a game. I am wanting to get a GPS package for which ever one I choose to buy. For this reason I'm leaning more towards the mid level of X30 or X50.
Of course I don't want to pay for functions that I may never use, at the same time I don't mind putting more money into something that I will grow with in time. So my questions is for those that have personal knowledge.
What is the difference between X30 and X50? I don't see much difference except price. Is there really much difference in speed between the 312 and 624? I mean for what I do would it make much of a difference. I have read about being able to fit more on a VGA screen then a QVGA screen but other than that is there a real advantage to a VGA screen?
Last question is about Pharos GPS. I have heard that Mapopolis is the best for detailed and most updated maps. But it is quite a bit more expensive and my understanding is you have to buy the individual maps for what area you need. I found Pharos GPS system that is also suppose to be good. I think I am leaning more towards the Pharos as I found it in a package with the X30 for a good deal. I would love to hear your guy's opinion as to which one is better. Also one last question, do you have to have a wireless internet service on your PDA to make the GPS work? I don't use wireless access for my PDA now but might use my wireless service in my house if I had the option.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
I wanted to add that I found a deal for a X30 312 with the Pharos Pocket GPS(wireless) for $529.00. I found that that is approx $200 savings from Dell. What do you think of this setup?
Thanks

The X30 and X50 are not hugely different. The processor speed matters more when you play videos and intensive games, doesn't matter that much if you just use the PIM, documents or email and web. The VGA however is a big differentiator as not many PDAs have that. If you read Lisa's review of the X50v, she talks about what you get for the VGA screen. Also keep in mind, not many apps were developed natively on the VGA. So there are might be some compatibility issues.

The differance between are as follows

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

X50v
1. Windows Mobile 2003 Windows Media Player 10.0
2. Compact Flash card slot
3. Intel? XScaleTM Processor at 624MHz
4. RAM Memory 64MB SDRAM
5. ROM Memory 128MB Intel StrataFlash? ROM
6. Integrated CompactFlash? ROM
7. Secure Digital / SDIO Now!
8. MMC Memory Card Slots (3.3v)
9. Integrated BluetoothTM
10. Integrated 802.11b Wireless

X30
1. Windows Mobile 2003
2. N/A
3. Intel? XScaleTM Processor at 624MHz with WMMX
4. RAM Memory 64MB SDRAM
5. ROM Memory 64MB Intel StrataFlash? ROM
6. N/A
7. Secure Digital / SDIO Now!
8. MMC Memory Card Slots (3.3v)
9. Integrated BluetoothTM
10. Integrated 802.11b Wireless

As for the GPS question I personally would recommend the teletype Bluetooth GPS. They have two modles one 12 channel WAAS GPS (my recommendation) and 16 channel NON-WAAS (still a good gps but WAAS narrows the error). Here is there link. http://www.teletype.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1951&Category_Code=13000

I currently have a older Ipaq which at the time was the only PDA with a color screen that wouldn't wash out (still maybe the only one). I'm currently scoping out the market for either a X50v or a Ipaq 5400/5500. I have the teletype PCMCIA GPS (Ithink they call it the rugged) bought it in 2000 and use it as a back up navigation source while flying as well as a door to door auto gps when driving on trips. I'm getting the 12channel Bluetooth GPS for christmas.

Hope this helps
Curtis
