question for Tanker Bob re: sk tools and active sync
      #19933 - 05/10/05 05:01 AM

My friend's new Dell PPC won't sync with his desktop. I'm wondering if he has the same problem with Active Sync that Tanker Bob mentioned in his series on PPC and Palm. Tanker Bob suggested using SK Tools to clean up old registries.

But if my friend can't use Active Sync, how can he install SK Tools onto his Dell PPC?

Is it possible to install SK Tools onto an SD card in an SD card reader, and then put the SD card into the PPC?

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Indeed it is. Most PPC programs come in two types of packages: a self-installer .exe file or a non-self-installer.cab file. The latter is usually CPU specific, so you want the ARM CAB. Copy the CAB file onto an SD card in another handheld or a card reader, install the card into the target PPC, and then execute the CAB file in File Explorer by double tapping on it. At this point, the program in the CAB file will be installed into RAM (Program Storage).

If you want to install the program into BIS or on a card, you can use a free utility called CABInstl that's available on SK's website. It can be installed in the same way into RAM before you install SKTools. After restoring the ActiveSync capability, you can uninstall CABInstl from RAM and then reinstall it where ever you wish.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tanker Bob,

Thanks for your message.

I installed SK Tools from my desktop pc to the SD card on my Toshiba e405. I then transferred the SD card to my friends Dell pda and ran SK tools from the SD card. This worked and we were able to run the program to delete old registry files.

Unfortunatly, his Active Sync still doesn't function.

But thanks for your help, and thanks for part four of your series.

Cheers,

Brooks

Glad that you got at least partial relief. Other things to try are to restart the PC, change USB ports, that kind of stuff. My ActiveSync fails on a regular basis at the USB level, requiring a PC restart to recover.

Unfortunately, SK tools didn't get Active Sync working again.

We ultimately resorted to a hard reset.

That did the trick.

Tanker Bob, thanks much for your column. Looking forward to future installments.

Brooks

Wow, sorry to hear that you had to hard reset. I hope that you have a good backup program. I use Sprite Backup, which has saved me a number of times already.

Thank you for your kind words about the columns. I'm glad that you enjoy them!
