Please help. I have never used wi fi before. I want to buy the HP 4700 and use its wi fi capabilities. I have an internet connection already. What else do I need? Thank you

If you want to use it at home, you need a broadband Internet connection and a wireless router. You could also use a WiFi card for your PC in place of the router, but this is complicated and less efficient.

Because in order to set up a WiFi connection using your computer as the base, you have to create an Ad Hoc connection, which is prone to difficulties based on what I've read. To make a standard wireless network, you need a router to serve as the base.

I recommend going with a WiFi router. Good routers don't cost much more than WiFi cards for your PC, and they give you so much more flexibility and security. I further recommend getting one that includes an SPI firewall for greater security. For simple Internet connections, you don't need 802.11g support (PDA's don't support g anyway), and 802.11b routers have become incredibly inexpensive and easy to set up.

I totally agree- setting up Windows connection sharing can be a hassle, while access points are generally very easy to set up. And if you're using ad hoc mode, you'll need to keep your PC turned on so it can serve the Internet connection to the PDA which negates some of the benefit of using a PDA rather than a PC. . . no saving electricity and no independance from that PC.
