I've heard that Sony's MagicGate Memory Sticks (the white ones)can cause copy-protection problems. However, other brands and Sony's more commonly available regular (non-MagicGate) Memory Sticks (purple colored) work fine. The MP3 player on the Clie may give you a little message complaining about playing non-commercial MP3s, but rest assured, it will then go ahead and play the tunes for you.

It seems strange that Sony are providing different types of MemoryStick for different applications - WHY! Surely they are all just a form of RAM?! How can they differ so much?
They are just trying to get more money, thats all!
eBay: there is a good shop on there for Clie gear - just search in shops for Clie - its BlueMountain or something - and its very good prices for memorysticks and accessories.

The MagicGate Memory Stick has built-in copy protection functionality and costs more than the regular purple Memory Sticks. Why Sony thought we'd want such a product, I can't tell you !
The purple ones are what you generally see in stores and are what folks use for their Clies, Sony digicams and digital camcorders.

A proud day for me - I have nearly bought (30 mins left on an eBay auction) - a Sony Clie NR70V - it looks amazing, and its just what I need.
Anyway, yeh, the memory sticks - what is all that MagicGate stuff about?! I saw that, and read about it, but its like - huh?! WHAT! WHY! WHEN! WHERE!
Anyway, thanks for the advice - this site rox!

Just checking: are the files in MP3 format?
Is the encoding rate set at 128K or lower. The Clie can't play anything encoded at higher bit rates. Generally the MP3s we use on the desktop are encoded at higher bit rates, so you may have to resample down to 128K.
