We're really liking the new XV6700, and we have say Verizon Wireless is on a roll. It's a most capable yet compact Pocket PC phone with a roomy thumb keyboard that slides out from the side. It's branded by UT Starcom and is actually made by ODM HTC (device codename Apache). The XV6700 is a close cousin to the Sprint PPC-6700 , but is clad in matte black with contrasting silver accents. The device runs Windows Mobile 5.0 on a 416 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64 megs of RAM and 128 megs of flash ROM. It has EVDO for 3G data speeds along with WiFi and Bluetooth. By phone standards, the XV6700 has a good 1.3MP camera with LED flash that doubles as an impromptu flashlight. If you need a powerful PDA, phone and fast data device in one, check out the XV6700.

Since so many of you have written in asking what the simple registry edit is which allows you to keep the phone on while using WiFi, I'm posting it here.
First get a registry editor, for example PHM Regedit which is free, or download the 14 day trial version of Resco File Explorer (excellent app!) which comes with a registry editor.
Use the editor to do the following:
Go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE
-> SERVICES
-->WirelessMGR
Edit the WirelessMGR entry called mutexflag and change the value from 1 to 0.
That's the only edit!
Save your changes and exit.
Wait 15 minutes then soft reset the phone to reboot it.
You're all set!

Just a note to say "Thanks!" for this tip. My job requires me to be both online and available by phone, not one or the other. Couldn't do this without this help.
Just a note for others: I couldn't use the ActiveSync 4.0 installer to get the product installed, so I copied the entire directory over to my phone and then tried to launch each file. The first few didn't install successfully, but I finally did get one to install OK. The file that worked for me was "regedit_Mrln_ARM.CAB".
By the way, I downloaded the PHM Regedit from here:

Thank you very much to LisaG, Curtis and the maker of PHM RegEdit. I had a similar problem as Curtis, but the copy and paste worked for me. There are plenty of comments already on the web about Verizon's tactics in locking out the wifi. I am equally disappointed in Microsoft in not supplying the most basic utilities like a RegEdit.
Does anyone know whether and how to view files on your desktop or notebook computer that are not connected to MS Exchange? I'm talking just your own personal use computer with say windows XP. Can it be done through the wifi, bluetooth or US connections? If so, how?

Yes, you can connect to Network shares using WiFi. You can use the included File Explorer to do so, or a 3rd party file manager if you prefer.

Thanks for the great review of the 6700 Lisa!! I purchased it after reading your review and I'm very happy with the unit. I am having a problem syncing to my laptop with a USB connection and active sync. It connects fine but just hangs on synchronizing without ever syncing.
Any ideas? I've tried active sync 4.0 and 4.1.

AS doesn't get along with software firewalls very well. These include Norton and Symantec's products. Microsoft has a support page dedicated to ActiveSync 4 problems, esp. firewall issues. If you haven't checked that out, it might help.

I just purchased this phone & is my first PDA, so I'm quite unfamiliar with PDAs. I also would like to make this WIFI change.
Do I download PHM Regedit to my PC & then use ActiveSync to alter the registry of the XV6700?
Or do I download & install PHM Regedit directly to my XV6700?

download the registry editor to your PC and install it on the XV6700 using ActiveSync. Then run the registry editor on the XV6700 to edit the registry. If the registry editor is available in CAB format for download, then you could download it directly to the PDA and run the CAB file on the XV6700 to install it.

First time posting here and I have to say that you folks know your stuff. I got my xv6700 wifi to work without turning off the phone service but I have a problem answering email.
On my treo I used to simply reply to emails sent to my phone via vtext. Now I am unable the error coming up is "cause code: mss.expt.p" so I tried entering the actual email address of the person instead of just replying and I get " the text message account cannot be used to send email messages"
verizon did not offer a solution saying that this phone is not able to send email through text like the treo. I doubt that so I need help. please help

They just might be right. I don't know of a way to reply to an email message using a text message rather than an email using the Pocket PC Messaging application.

Got this from that link Lisa provided:
"Im not sure if any one mentioned this yet. I shut off my blinking LED by going:
Hkey_Local_Machine/Drivers/Builtin/AllLEDMgr
And change the Index value from 1 to 0
Then soft reset."
Just did it and it worked. This is for both the blue and green LEDs.
Note: This deactivated the vibrate mode on my phone.
I successfully did it on my phone using the PHM RegEdit. But the vibrate no longer works & I can no longer receive a flashing orange light alerting me that I have a missed call, voice message or text message.
So it's a "pick your poison" issue. Do you want all the blinking lights & vibrate to work? Or no blinking lights & no vibrate?

I have had the XV 6600 since last april and absolutely hated the phone, but loved the EV-DO service. Based on reviews of the XV6700 I have decided to upgrade and can't wait to get my phone. (It's actually at home now, but I won't be there until friday) I actually broke down and bought an EVDO PC card because I needed to be able to use the EVDO service and my phone at the same time. I changed my phone data plan to a per KB plan for those times when I don't want to whip the laptop out just to check my email. With Wi-fi support included I don't plan to use the cell phone data plan too often.
On a side note...Does anyone know if the XV6700 or Mobile 5 supports individual ring tones for contacts or is that feature still only from third party app's?

Thanks for that regedit tip. Works like a charm.
I have a question about the Pocket MSN. I have an MSN account from my PC, but I can't sign in to any of the Pocket MSN applications (Messenager or Hotmail). I get an error saying that the service isn't available.
It can't be the connection itself, because I also have a data plan (45$/month) and I tried using the Wireless connection and the passthrough connection for my PC. I get the same error on all three methods.
I tried googling this issue but I can't find any thing. Any help would be great! Thanks
