I want to download files(mp3s) from my desktop to mobile device
      #22855 - 03/01/06 10:25 AM

I want to be able to download mp3s remotely from my desktop pc over the internet to a mobile device that will play them. I would also like it to browse the net and make phone calls. Which mobile devices are capable doing of this?

thanks
PC

Pocket PC phones would be the best bet. Examples are the MDA, Cingular 8125, i-mate K-JAM, Sprint PPC-6700 and the Treo 700w, all of which are reviewed on our site.

I think this question almost depends more on the desktop than on the handheld. You will have to find a way to get your computer's music files actually onto the Internet, without getting sued by the RIAA. It seems like at a minimum, you would need some sort of encryption or authentication system (which many web servers have), and you would have to either leave your computer on at all times or find another server that will host your files with the necessary security. Your security system may require special software for the PocketPC, which may or may not exist (don't forget that wireless syncing is disabled in ActiveSync 4).

There have been Internet-based services for storing MP3s in the past, and even with the proper security, they have mostly been sued out of existence. I'm not saying that it's fair... but I think the request stated in this thread is a pretty lofty goal at this point.

I agree with Lisa. the pocket pcs that she has mentioned has the faster download speeds such as evdo and edge. u'd need that for downloading 3mb files.

With Windows Media Player 10 and MS' DRM, you're allowed to put your purchased music on the MP3 players,PMPs and PDAs of your choice, so it probably doesn't violate any of those annoying laws .

Right, but how does that enable you to send the files over the Internet?

ActiveSync 4 with its support for Win. Media Player 10 syncing and streaming to authorized devices.

Oh okay - I didn't know about that. (I have an iPaq 1940, and even AS 3.8 barely works on Virtual PC...) Thanks for the info.
