HP iPAQ hx4700 or hx2790?
      #23111 - 03/21/06 11:03 PM

First off, I would like to congratulate you people on a great site - I have found some really useful information here and your reviews are very comprehensive and interesting.

I am looking for a replacement for my ageing Toshiba e400. Essentially, I need a new Pocket PC that will allow me to watch videos, listen to music, access the internet via Wi-Fi and use Word, Excel, etc. I have found two PDAs that look rather good and cost about the same (at least here in England): the older HP iPAQ hx4700 and the newer HP iPAQ hx2790.

I like the hx4700 because it has a big 4" screen to watch videos, however it comes with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and Windows Media Player 9 Mobile.

The hx2790 only has a 3.5" screen but it comes with Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile.

So which one do you think I should go for and why? I really like the idea of a big screen but is Windows Mobile 5.0 much better than Windows Mobile 2003 SE? Also, is Media Player 10 much better than Media Player 9? Is it possible to upgrade either Windows or the Media Player on the hx4700? Would the hx4700 have enough memory for Windows Mobile 5.0?

...or should I go for something completely different?

Sorry for so many questions and thank you in advance for any help or guidance...

Well, in the last couple of days HP announced the WM5 upgrade for the hx4700 which includes Windows Media Player 10. So that takes care of that problem . If you're into watching video on the device, the hx4700's display wins, hands down. VGA encoded videos look just fabulous on the 4700.

I was wondering the same thing...4700 seems so cool...I have held and played with a 2795..like rubber sides and solid "professional" feel...never held a 4700..how does it compare?...I had a sony NR70 clie (palm) and loved the metal. Do you think one would want/need to upgrade to mobile 5.0 or is the existing OS fine for "typical" use...Buy.com has 4700 for about 555.00 with $15 new customer coupon...good deal...just don't want to feel like I am buying old technology...I mean it came out in 2004..right? But most others on market seem "plastic". Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

I am also trying to decide which product to get, on the cnet reviews of the hx4700 a user commented on the dell Axim 51v, is that a better choice for some people not all. Or do you think I might be better off with a newer modile. Thanks in advance.

It is true that the iPAQ 4700 is an older model but it still has a lot going for it-- especially that really lovely VGA display which is nicer than the Dell's. Personally I'd say that WM2003SE is fine for most people and actually faster than WM5. The one really nice thing about WM5 is persistent memory- if you're the kind of person who forgets to charge the PDA and doesn't do backups, losing your data due to a complete battery drain is no fun.
