I bought a firewire port for my dell inspiron 1300 at best buy, and it didn't fit. They told me that dell made a few models with slots designed to only be compatible with specific ports. Apparently, they don't do this anymore because people were pissed off, as I am. I can't find this port anywhere on dell.com, does anyone have any ideas?

Hello Lori,
Dell's site indicates that the 1300 can use a Mini-PCI card (which is currently less popular than the CardBus format).
I did some searching and could not find anyone offering a Mini-PCI Firewire card. It appears that this slot is intended primarily for wireless networking cards. There wouldn't be any other way to add Firewire to a laptop either.
Which Firewire device were you hoping to use? Some sort of DV camera, maybe?

Does your camera save to any sort of removable media (like a disc or memory card)? It would probably be a lot easier to find a reader for most media types than to find a Firewire card for that proprietary port.

nope, just a dv port for a firewire cable
i think i have the right thing here what do you think?

sure is expensive though
hey thanks for your help 
ps the reviews that i looked at called this port an expresscard port, so i looked up expresscard firewire ports and that was one of the results. when i look into the port, it seems to be shaped that way and i think that card may fit....

I did some research, and I'm pretty sure ExpressCard is different from Mini-PCI. ExpressCard is more like the "sequel" to CardBus (which was the successor to PCMCIA). Unfortunately, I don't think that would work.
