Review: QTEK 8500 Windows Mobile Clamshell Smartphone
      #25227 - 09/18/06 05:14 PM

This is one of several versions of the device codenamed HTC STRTrk (Star Trek for those who like their vowels). It's one of the few clamshell MS Smartphones and it does bear a resemblance to its namesake, the Star Trek communicator. This is a Windows Mobile 5 quad band GSM phone with EDGE for data. It has a 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth and is sold unlocked by importers in the US. It's the kissing cousin to the i-mate Smartflip and Cingular 3125 (we'll be reviewing the Cingular 3125 shortly).

Hi,

I owe a qtek 8500 and i'm actually experiencing the signal-strength problem described in the review. according to the reviewer it could be possible to fix this problem using i-mate software, but how do you do this?
thanks in advance,
stefanie

It's not for the faint of heart. You'd need to download the ROM for the i-mate SmartFlip and install it on the QTEK. This requires some knowledge of ROM upgrades and changing manufacturer codes on the device. Have you checked the QTEK website to see if they have a ROM update available? That would a much easier route to try first. The website is http://www.myqtek.com . If you're in the US, just choose Europe as your region. You will need to register in order to see and download updates.

i must admit i'm a little bit afraid of doing a ROM-upgrade.
the qtek site wasn't any help. you have to register to download rom upgrades but the site didn't accept my IMEI number for some strange reasons.
aren't there any other solutions?

There is no other solution I know of. Doing a ROM upgrade that's actually meant for your phone (using a QTEK ROM for a QTEK phone) really isn't hard at all. If the site isn't accepting your phone's IMEI, try sending them an email telling them about your registration problem.

i found a belgian smartphonesite that did accept my IMEI. I downloaded and did the rom update, but unfortunately the signal is still extremely low. I really don't understand, same location, same sim card gives excellent signal with my old nokia but almost nothing with this new qtek

Sorry to hear that . It know it's certainly a mystery because every other version of that fine has good reception. I don't know what they did wrong there.

Hi, Stefanie.

I know You posted yhis a long time now, but I just got a Qtek 9100 and can't register at myqtek.com. I receive the same error, that my IMEI is not acceepted because my phone is not an authorized BrightPoint phone...
So, what is this belgian smartphonesite you've downloaded new ROMs?
Thanks,

Carlos Marins.
