Our shiny new Samsung BlackJack arrived today. Otherwise known as the Samsung SPH-i607, this is a GSM Windows Mobile Smartphone that competes with the T-Mobile Dash and Motorola Q. It features a landscape 320 x 240 display that's very sharp and pretty, though the Dash's is a bit larger with even more pleasing color. The phone runs Windows Mobile 5 with AKU 3.0.2 for all the latest enhancements and bug fixes. This is an MS Smartphone, not a Pocket PC Phone Edition, which means it lacks a touch screen. It's offered by Cingular in the US and should be available on Nov. 16th for $199 with a 2 year contract.
The BlackJack is a close cousin to the import triband Samsung i320 we reviewed in September. The BlackJack/ i607 makes some important improvements in keyboard layout and battery life over the i320. And of course the BlackJack is 3G and quadband .

It's got 3G with HSDPA on the US bands (850 and 1900MHz) and quad band GSM for voice and 2.5G (EDGE) data. Reception on Cingular's 3G network in the Dallas metro area has been superb, beating even the Cingular 8525. Voice quality is also excellent and call volume is louder than most GSM phones.

On the performance front, the i607 has a dual core TI OMAP1710 processor that's no stranger to MS smartphones. The OMAP1710 ships in a 220MHz configuration. Sorry, it doesn't get the i320's 416MHz processor, but that's probably a good thing when it comes to battery life (the i320 doesn't do well there, and 3G would only make it worse). The phone feels middle of the road in responsiveness and is average for video playback using media from our own library. It absolutely does well with CingularVideo, though the switch from web browser to Windows Media Player Mobile is sometimes a little strained (the phone has added codecs for Windows Media Player Mobile to handle Cingular's Real format video files). Don't ask me why this isn't on the Cingular 8525 as well . The phone has 64 megs of RAM and 128 megs of flash ROM with 55 megs free for storage.
How does the device look and feel? It looks really slick and certainly fits the "thin is in" requirement. It's about the same weight as the Dash and a bit taller. They're close enough that I wouldn't make a buying decision based on size or weight. The Dash wins on feel in hand thanks to its curve and rubberized coating. But our staffers prefer the Samsung's keyboard, roomy and easy-going d-pad and general one-handed operational ease.

The BlackJack has a jog dial on the side which you can use to scroll through windows, and an action button. While the HTC S620 and Dash's JOGGR strip is cool and innovative, the Samsung's scroll wheel is easier to use and isn't accidentally doing undesirable things.
The phone comes with a charger, USB sync cable and two batteries. Noteably absent are the stereo earbud headphones with mic usually included with HTC-manufactured Microsoft phones . Given that the phone uses a proprietary combo sync/charge/headset jack, I'd really have liked to see these included. Guess we'll just have to make do with Bluetooth headsets and Bluetooth stereo headphones. Speaking of which, the BlackJack has Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support and Bluetooth Printing Profile among others.
So far, the verdict is a thumbs-up. And we've very impressed with Cingluar's many recent and upcoming additions to their PDA and smartphone lines. We'll have our review out within a week, and in the meantime, feel free to post questions here.

I am a T-Mobile customer using the SDA. I just bought the Blackjack five days ago. I like it so far, but the battery life has not been very good. I can't get more than 30 hours per charge using Direct Push set to notify me as soon as new email arrives, talking for less than 5 minutes, and surfing for less than 15 minutes. The responsiveness of opening and running programs seems a tad bit faster than the Dash, but I only used the Dash at the T-Mobile store. I am thinking about porting my T-Mobile number over to Cingular, but didn't want to do it without giving the Dash a chance, which may have a much better battery life. 3G on the Blackjack is great. But as far as necessity ... I guess it's not REALLY necessary. I am looking forward to MobileTechReview's reviews of the Dash/Excalibur and Blackjack. Keep up the great work.

We'll have our reviews of the BlackJack and Dash (plus HTC S620) out this week. Yes, the BlackJack's battery life isn't so hot when you use DirectPush. It does last longer without DirectPush but still is much shorter than the Dash. Though they do give you a 2nd battery and external charger for that battery to help things along. So that evens them out or puts the Samsung somewhat ahead. That is if you don't mind swapping batteries.

I tried a Q but had a major problem and want to know if this is also the case with the Blackjack. Please tell if this is the case with the Blackjack Here is the problem I had with the Q:
If I dial a company and their automated attendant answers "press # for the Company directory and then dial by name," I press # (which works) and then I cannot dial the name, even using the half moon button. I can only dial those letters associated with the numbers on the keypad, but nothing happens for other letters. I talked to Verizon and am told it is a problem with the Q.
What happens when you try to dial by name with the Blackjack?

You will run into the same problem with the BlackJack. It doesn't have any software that transforms the 26 letters of the alphabet to the corresponding digits 0 through 9. An on-screen dialer (such as that on a PPC Phone or Treo), or keyboard that has the appropriate letters masked over the numbers would be the only solutions (I've never seen one- the letters would probably be too small to see!).
I had the same problem with the Nokia E61, so I stored a JPEG photo I took of a regular number pad on the phone. I opened and displayed it on screen when I needed to know what numbers corresponded to "jones" for example on a standard numeric keypad.

I am sorry to keep asking questions. One final one--- can it book used as a broadband modem tethered to a laptop like the Q? Verizon now allows you to do that with a Q, but it costs $15 per month extra. That is not a requirement for me, but I just want to know all of the comparisons, although I am inclined to the Blackjack.

That's what the forum is here for-- questions . Yes, you can use the BlackJack as a modem for a notebook and/or desktop computer.

Not exactly broadband, though that's how Verizon likes to refer to it. I generally get 400-500k which is pretty fast but not as fast as DSL or cable modem. And will only serve one PC at a time, not a whole house of computers.

1. Is there a memory manager to shutdown programs consuming memo, and if so, where is it?
2. How can one determine the amount of memory in use?

Use Task Manager (a standard WM 5 Smartphone app) in the Applications folder to shut down programs and see how much memory is free.
