You can just use a standard HDMI cable, although Sony will sell you their official HDMI cable for $50, which surprisingly is about $10 cheaper than any of the others I could find at Best Buy, with some HDMI cables going for almost $200.

The Playstation 3 seems like a great system, but I'm just not sold enough on it yet to shell out 600 bucks for one just yet. When can we expect games like Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank to show up? I'd ask about a Final Fantasy game but since it took over 4 years to complete FFXII, I'm not hopeful that we'll see one on the Playstation 3 anytime soon.
I have an hdtv that only supports up to 720p, but I notice that the Playstation 3 supports 1080p. Will I still be able to hook the Playstation 3 up to my hdtv since it only supports the 720p? Thanks and great faq once again!

Well $600 is a sound investment in a video game system, but I do think the system is going to be fantastic over time. As for your question regarding a Jak & Daxter or Ratchet & Clank game, there is rumors regarding both games being in development already for the Playstation 3.
Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier is rumored to be in development for the Playstation 3. Not much else is known about the game other than it will be the second game in the series (Jak X being the first) to offer online game play.
There is also a rumored Rathet & Clank game being developed for both the PSP (Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters) as well as a still-untitled Ratchet & Clank game for the Playstation 3. It would appear that even if these games are in fact in development, and I'm fairly sure they are, they are still likely very early in development.
As for your HDTV question, 720p is still great for the Playstation 3 system as many of the early games only support up to 720p anyway. There will be 1080p capable games coming out for the Playstation 3, but these games will still look terrific even in 720p on your HDTV. So no need to worry. : )

Slightly off topic: have you seen the PS3 ads on TV? The one with a doll sitting opposite of a PS3? I don't completely get it. Do you?

I guess I haven't see that one. The one I've seen is the boy climbing out of bed and looking over at the doll sitting on the end table next to the alarm clock. Then the boy heads up to the roof of his apartment building and stares up at the sky until he notices another guy on the opposite rooftop doing the same thing. Then it just says "11/17/06" and fades out. I know the two ads I've seen have been heavy on the "waiting on the PS3" idea. I'll keep a look out for the one you're talking about.

ok. I read through but either didn't understand or didn't find what i was looking for. I have an HDTV capable of 1080p, but it's not HDMI. It has DVI and component jacks in the back, but not hdmi(it's slightly older). Is it possible to plug my PS3 into my DVI jack? will it have that capability? Will it require a converter? do they even make converters for that matter? I have the ability to plug the optical audio into my surround sound so the sound would still be taken care of.
Lil help?

You have either HDMI or Component connections on the PS3. What you have to find out is if your TV supports 1080p through the component input. Some do, and some don't. The fact that your TV doesn't even have an HDMI input would lead me to believe that the DVI input is the only 1080p capable input on your TV, but you'll need to get online and search your TV's model number and check the specifications. It is confusing, I know. There are even HDTVs now that "support" 1080p signals, but don't actually "output" 1080p signals, they merely convert them to 720p. If the resolution on the specs isn't at least XXXX x 1080 you won't get "true" 1080p. Get all that. : ) If you're still confused, don't hesitate to ask.

i get it. i'll have to track down my docs on it. It's an older Sony Trinitron tube. I looked at the back of the jacks and it had 1080 listed, but like you said that doesn't tell me if it displays it or converts it. plus i didn't look to see if it's 1080i or p. hmmm.

If it's a tube it's only 1080i. Anything progressive scan will be converted to 1080i automatically. And I can tell you, 1080i CAN be transmitted over a component cable, so as long as you have those connections on your TV, you're good either way.

awesome! looked more closely and the component can do 1080i. Perhaps I'm all set for the next gen just need to buy an hdmi converter or cable. already have a dvi cable. all these cables are crazy expensive. got my dvi cable for 50 a while ago when i was messing with pluggin my comp into it. the dvi-hdmi plug is 30. oh well. that's technology.

I bought a Monster HDMI cable the other day and it was $69.99. With technology comes higher price tags unfortunately. With the Playstation 3 I just have to keep telling myself that it's also a Blu-Ray player which ALONE would run me nearly $1000. : ) If you have any other questions, I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Get an HDMI/DVI cable. I have one for connecting my laptop to my HDTV. DVI to laptop/HDMI to tv. HDMI and DVI output the exact same video signal. There is no difference which is why they can make a cable with an HDMI connector on one end and a DVI on the other with no hardware converter between them. The only difference is that HDMI also carries digital audio signals as well. If your TV has DVI port only this cable should work with no problems as it's the same video signal going from PS3 HDMI to the TV DVI.
Hope this helps.

Just wondering if the standard A/V connection (non-HDMI) will be composite (old-school "yellow") or component (RGB)? I'm assuming it would have to be component in order to be HD...but if that's the case wouldn't that limit the connectivity to relatively newer TV's? Or is the only way to get true HD out of the system is by using HDMI?
Also, is it safe to assume that, since you cannot use PS2 controllers, PS 2 games like "Guitar Hero", "Dance Dance" or any of the many other simulation games (driving, flying, golf, etc.) won't be compatible? If so, is there any likelyhood that Sony will come up with a workaround (i.e. PS2 controller to USB adapter) or am I being too idealistic?
Thanks for all of your information...it's nice to be able to do some research before shelling out $600 (min.) for a toy! Especially since the availability will be so limited (coincedence...doubt it!). I don't really want to camp out in front of Best Buy if it's not even going to do what I want it to right out of the box!

The sad fact is, Sony is only including the standard composite cable with the system even though it's an HD capable system. That means just the Yellow/Red/White connections, with no HD signal. You can buy the component or HDMI cables seperately. If you want 1080p, you have to buy the HDMI cable. Component will allow 1080p for games, but there is a copy protection scheme that prohibits the full 1080p signal through component cables when watching Blu-Ray movies. So your best bet is to get the HDMI cable.
As for using PS2 specific stuff, I'm assuming that Sony will come out with an adapter via the USB slot, that or a third party will release one for these peripherals. The Guitar Hero II is fairly popular, so I'll do some checking and see if I can find any information on an adapter for this.

Yo, man how noticable is the difference between 1080i and 1080p? I just bought a 1080i capable LCDTV and i was wonderin if i should have just shelled out the extra cash for the 1080p capability. . .

If you bought an LCD HDTV then you'll get that 1080i signal converted to 720p. Progressive scan is the native output on LCD HDTVs. As far as the difference between 720p and 1080p, you'll only notice a real difference if the TV is larger than 50 inches. Anything under that is barely even noticeable, even up close. 1080p is a little better, but not enough to warrant the cost, at least in my opinion.

I might sound a bit ignorant, but I dont know much about computers. The last system I owned was a PS1 and I'm going to get a PS3 when more come out. Anyways, I still don't really understand how the internet connection works. So when I first plug in my PS3 to a TV, will I instintaniously be connected to the internet and is it free? And if I do connect to the internet, does that mean that I'll be able to play with other people online? Also, what exactly is broadband? Told that I'm clueless about technology.
If I dont have a HDTV, will it make my PS3 graphics seem like PS2? Also, if I don't have a widescreen, will some of the screen be cut out or will the PS3 adjust accordingly to the TV size? Thanks

no. You have to get your internet connection from a ISP(internet service provider) such as DSL from your phone company or cable internet from your cable company. What is free is the ability for your PS3 to play on the internet. The xbox360 charges a monthly fee for playing multiplayer games over the internet.

yes
Quote:

Broadband is highspeed internet. "Band" refers to bandwidth which is how much information can flow back and forth at once. Pretty much anything better than dial up is considered broadband.

I'm pretty sure that the graphics will still look better than the ps2, but they won't look as great as the could. I dunno about the last question.

Well as for the last question, you will still get the step-up in graphics, but it won't be as clear and crisp on a regular TV as it would an HDTV. As for the widescreen question, it will automatically be sized to fit your screen whether it's a 4:3 or 16x9 widescreen. You won't get anything cut off. There have been some complaints, however, about people with regular TVs not being able to read some text on some of the PS3 games. So that might be a consideration for you if you only have a standard definition TV.

I Think it overheated because i had it in a inclosed area with not much vetilation....So i took it out from where i had it and let it lay on it's side out in open air and it hasn't acted up yet......I also went on Ebay and bought a cooling Fan that can attach to the PS3 by USB so that it would blow more air into the system...but i have not got it in the mail yet....I would rather be safe then sorry again.. but the system does run kinda Hot tho...But it's worth it and as long as it stays cool i ok with it...

I imported and sold a PS3 and the person i sold it to is having the blinking lights problem does anyone know how to fix it
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
25-02-07
EDIT: If know one knows how to fix this problem, is there anyway to take the components out of the ps3 and make a computer cos there got to be something worth keeping i think theres a 7 core 3.2ghz processor, some cutting edge ram and a good graphics card and a blu ray drive that you might be able to do something with but the problem is getting something to fix it all together.

Hi,
On reding the forum I understand that to get the most out of My PS3 and TV I need a HDMI to DVI cable. But my question is about the sound, will this also be transmitted through this cable? or will it be lost? therefore me having to use either an external sterio or speaker system instead of the TV? and will I need any more cables to do this? Cheers
