school notes & organiser
      #27307 - 04/09/07 07:51 PM

Hello
For use as above, I want something a lot smaller and lighter than a laptop. What is the best device that meets my following needs:
- screen 4" min, large font
- compatible with Outlook
- lightweight w/adaptable keyboard option
- expandable memory

Nice to have:
- audio download & playback
- digicam
- phone
- email & internet

Thanks

Among PDAs, none have 4" displays. 3.5" is the largest and those were largely replaced by even smaller screened models. The Palm T|X and the Dell Axim X51v are the closest in terms of screen real estate and features you mentioned (though no camera and phone). PDA phones tend to have 2.8" or smaller displays since folks want their phones small.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like maybe I need something other than a PDA. I want really just a small, light laptop-type of device for note-taking and personal organiser. Is there such a thing with a keyboard?

There are such beasts, but I warn you they're pretty pricy since miniaturization comes at a premium. There's the OQO model 01 and recently released model 02, the Sony Vaio UX Series and the recently released FlipStart. They're palmtop computers that run full Windows and sell for around $2,000 (older versions are less). The model 01 and Sony Vaio UX are reviewed on our site. The drawback are their high resolution but small (4.5") displays. Much harder on the eyes than PDAs. A good compromise notebook is the Sony Vaio TX series (the TX850 is reviewed on our site). It's a normal design notebook that's not much bigger than a trade novel.
