Sprint to Deliver Pandora for Personalized Streaming Radio on Mobile Phones
      #27670 - 05/23/07 09:53 AM

Sprint announced Pandora online music service for Sprint's mobile phone customers. Here is more info from the announcement:

"Sprint customers now have the power in their hands to exclusively discover new music and hear favorite songs through their own personalized "DJ" on their phone. Sprint continues to lead mobile music by delivering Pandora for the first time on mobile. The online music service phenomenon Pandora (www.Pandora.com), which has exploded in popularity to more than 6.5 million users almost entirely by word of mouth, is now available on select Sprint Power Vision phones.

Listening to Pandora is simple: users enter a song or artist that they like, and within seconds, Pandora delivers a personalized radio station with a continuous stream of songs that fit the same sound and style. The songs are selected based on the Music Genome Project, Pandora's proprietary system that utilizes highly trained musicians to analyze songs one at a time. These musicians identify hundreds of different musical qualities of each recording, including melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics and vocals.

Pandora on Sprint phones is integrated seamlessly with the online version of Pandora. Up to 100 stations can be saved in a user's account, and they can be enjoyed online at www.pandora.com and on Sprint phones anywhere within Sprint's extensive nationwide Power Vision network. Sprint customers can also create new stations directly on their phones through an easy-to-use interface.

Information about the current song (including title, artist and album) is displayed on the phone's color screen, and customers can also scroll backwards to see this information for recently played songs. Additionally, customers can rate songs with the touch of a button with either "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" so Pandora can immediately adjust the station's programming, and they can pause a song as well as skip a song that they don't want to hear.

Sprint customers can bookmark a song, and the song name and artist will be saved. The bookmark can serve as a reminder to purchase the song later on the Sprint Music Store, which offers more than 1.6 million songs that can be downloaded wirelessly on the phone in as little as 30 seconds for only 99 cents each with a Power Vision data plan.

"Pandora is like that one friend who everyone wants to have ? someone who really knows and loves music and who can recommend a long list of bands and songs after you mention what you've been listening to lately," said Jeff Luther, director of entertainment wireless data for Sprint. "Pandora is a great way to break out of the same songs on your playlist and hear some new music that you may have never found otherwise. It's the latest example of the many innovative ways that Sprint delivers music on the one device people carry with them throughout the day."

"This is a watershed moment for radio. Pandora's unique approach to radio combined with Sprint's powerful wireless broadband network heralds a new era of music listening. Now listeners can have personalized radio throughout the day - in the car, at home, at the gym ? custom-created stations wherever they are on the Power Vision network," said Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora. "Starting today, radio means something totally different. Together, Sprint and Pandora are radically changing what it means to tune-in."

Pandora is now available on five Sprint Power Vision phones: the FUSIC by LG, A900 and A920 by Samsung, and 7500 and 8400 by Sanyo. By the end of June, Pandora will be available on all Sprint Power Vision phones. Pandora on Sprint, which includes both ad-free online and mobile access, is available for a no-charge trial for the first 30 days and then costs an additional $2.99 per month with a Power Vision data plan (standard Power Vision charges apply). To download, select the "Web" icon on the phone's main menu and then type "Pandora" in the search option. For more information, visit Pandora's newly redesigned website, www.pandora.com."
