Review: HTC Mogul PPC-6800 Windows Mobile Phone for Sprint
      #27856 - 06/17/07 11:05 PM

HTC Mogul (PPC-6800) Here's Sprint's replacement for the once-beloved but now aged PPC-6700. This Windows Mobile Professional 6 (Pocket PC) phone has a lot to offer: strong performance from its 400MHz Qualcomm MSM7500 CPU, a whopping 256 megs of flash memory and EVDO Rev. 0 with a free software upgrade to EVDO Rev. A promised later this year. The Mogul has WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash. It has a microSD card slot and comes with a 512 meg card.

I don't see any detail regarding GPS for this phone. Sprint's website tout's GPS but I'm looking for confirmation that it will work for "on the go" step by step driving directions.

Any help is appreciated!

Per Sprint Website:
Key Features
Sprint Music Store enabled
Speakerphone
Built-in Camera
Web and Email Capable
Bluetooth Wireless Technology
External display
GPS enabled
Expandable memory card slot
Voice-activated dialing
Broadband-like speeds where available

We found no evidence of a full GPS built into the Mogul, Windows Mobile's GPS control panel didn't see one, there is no GPS application on the device and Google Maps says "your GPS receiver does not appear to be responding. Make sure you have a GPS receiver and that it is turned on...". This is will enchanced location turned on (as opposed to 911 only).

So if it's in there, we haven't found a way of getting it to show itself. And there's no mention of GPS in the 135 page printed manual.

Follow up: we just spoke with Sprint and indeed the device does not have a dedicated GPS, only 911 services.

The HTC Mogul does come with a GPS reciever. Check out page 176. http://www.sprint.com/cdma/assets/pdfs/phone_guides/htc/ppc_6800_ug.pdf

The problem is Sprint says it doesn't. On page 176 (appendix section) of the PDF you mentioned, that statement is there just to state it complies with the FCC's Enhanced 911 law (E911 GPS ALI). If you read further in that section it says "Finally, customers are advised that the Mogul's ALI capability is to be used for E911 purposes only".

I broke down and purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 for Smartphones (010-00654-00). It should be here today... funny thing is that I'm still waiting for the Mogul. Apparently it's backordered. GRRRRRRRR!

Has anyone tried the Garmin Mobile 10 on this phone?

I get the same issue with google maps and otehr applications .. seems as if a puck is needed to be purchase ... damn them $$$.. I called HTC and talked to the support folks I am under the impression it IS supposed to be there but something is not koesher with it, possibly do to it being a branded product.. do you think it is to use a sprint service (for their revenue)?

would not suprise me and it is ok but they should not advertise and promote something that is not that is all ..

anyone found anything different?

Will the Garmin GPS for smartphones work? I checked their website and they didn't have the Mogul or the 6800 listed as a compatible device.

Your best bet would be to call them or send them an email and ask. Bluetooth GPS devices themselves should be compatible but you want to make sure their device is compatible with Windows Mobile Profession and that it comes with a microSD card (if it uses a provided card for the maps).

What data phone do you recommend for reading attachments, sending emails and SMS text, pictures, would like the gps since my old, crappy Sanyo 8100 even has it and editting files? Would change service if I have to, but ive been with sprint for a long time and would rather stay put.
