Earlier today, Apple released firmware update version 1.1.1 for the iPhone. The update adds some highly anticipated features, such as access to the WiFi iTunes Store and greater control over ringtone and other volume settings, along with some unexpected surprises, such as TV output capability. As usual, numerous security fixes are also included.
If you've used any custom modifications on your iPhone, however, you may also see some unexpected surprises that you won't be so happy about. For example, iPhone update 1.1.1 completely disables iToner and other ringtone software, and it is unclear if programs of this type will ever be able to work with the iPhone again. Apple warns that applying the update to an iPhone that has been "unlocked" from AT&T can permanently destroy the iPhone, although some sources indicate that it is possible to re-lock your phone and then do the update safely.
The 152.3 MB update is available to Mac and Windows users for download via iTunes.
