Google announces Android mobile phone OS, not a Gphone
      #28932 - 11/05/07 12:13 PM

Today Google unveiled their mobile phone plans, and it's not the rumored Gphone but rather a software platform for mobile phones. Android is an open source Linux-based OS for cell phones that Google has developed, and they won't charge handset manufacturers a dime to use it in upcoming phones. Instead, Google hopes to make money with their bundled apps and services like search and more.

The Open Handset Alliance is in with Google for Android, and there are many handset manufacturers, carriers and chipmakers signed up including Intel, NVIDIA, TI, HTC (wow!), LG, Sprint and T-Mobile. They expect phones running Adroid will ship in the 2nd half of 2008.
