There are several PPC phones that I like-- it's easier to narrow it down a bit by price, carrier and etc. Carrier's coverage quality varies by region and state, so the one I like might not work for someone living elsewhere. That said, I use AT&T mostly, and I found their service quite good in Austin, which is where you say you're located.
