iPhone 2.1 firmware update is out now
      #31373 - 09/12/08 10:08 AM

Finally-- it's here. Apple's iPhone 2.1 firmware is available through iTunes. Just sync your iPhone or iPhone 3G running some version of the 2.0.x firmware using iTunes and it will tell you the 2.1 update is ready for download and install. The firmware download is 238 megs.

Updates include:
Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
Significantly better battery life for most users
Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
Faster installation of 3rd party applications
Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
Improved performance in text messaging
Faster loading and searching of contacts
Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
Genius playlist creation

So plug in your iPhone 3G now and start downloading. We'll report back after our update is finished.

You can read more about the update here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

We've got 2.1 installed on our iPhone 3G and it's mostly good cheer so far:

App updates really do install more quickly and the process doesn't mess with app icon location anymore. The app's icon stays in the same location on the same page as they were before being updated.

The signal strength bars are MUCH higher. We went from an average 1 to 2 bars of 3G signal to full or one bar short of full. This is cosmetic since field test still shows the phone having a -99 bd signal. The iPhone now represents signal as optimistically as some Nokia phones .

Despite having oodles of 3rd party apps installed on my iPhone, it very rarely crashed, so I can't comment on improvements in that area.

Backup time went from 30 minutes to just 2 minutes! Yeeehah!!!!

Has it alleviated the issues with dropped calls? Seems like those were hitting you even harder than most people.

Too early to tell. I'm not done calling everyone I know to test that out . But I certainly hope so since it was a significant problem for me before.
