First Look Review: US 3G HTC Touch Diamond (unlocked GSM)
      #31386 - 09/13/08 01:05 PM

First Look. It's raining Diamonds here. This time we've gotten a hold of the US unlocked GSM HTC Touch Diamond before its official release. The US version has dual band US 3G HSDPA that works on ATT's 850/1900 bands. It's also a quad band GSM unlocked world phone with EDGE. Like the Sprint Diamond, it's a little thicker than the original Euro model, but it retains the Diamond-faceted back and overall great looks. The battery is larger than the Euro Diamond, and this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional phone features TouchFLO 3D, GPS, VGA display, WiFi, Bluetooth and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

So, in your opinion, if someone, say, wanted the slimmer "Euro" look for the US Diamond, could they swap out the battery and cover for the originals and achieve that? Or has the interior actually been altered enough to prevent that? Thanks.

Actually, there's a lot of empty space under the cover, and the battery stands taller than the rest of the components. The area just above the camera lens underneath is *almost* as tall as the high capacity battery, but that was the case with the original Diamond. I don't have my Euro Diamond handy, but I think the swap should work.

If I'm right, with the new European ROM work fine the 850 MHz and 3G on 850/900... Then, the only difference will be the battery and forms?

For the Euro Diamond, there is a ROM that enables 850MHz for the GSM/EDGE radio (the hardware is actually quad band GSM). The 3G radio (which is a separate radio) does not support 850MHz. In the US, AT&T primarily uses 1900MHz for 3G, which is another problem.
