Sony announces the new Vaio TT 11.1" notebook line with Blu-ray
      #31457 - 09/23/08 02:23 PM

We've always loved the Sony Vaio TZ line of ultraportable computers. The Vaio TT line ups the coolness by adding a built-in Blu-ray drive (and we used to think the TZ's built-in DVD burner was cool!). And no, this has nothing to do with Audio's little sports car.

The TT weighs just 2.83 lbs. and is less than 1 inch thin. Blu-ray models can play full 1080p resolution video and movies when connected to an HDTV via HDMI or to the internal 16:9 display.

The Vaio TT has an 11.1" LED backlit XBRITE Dura-View display (same display technology as the Sony Vaio Z550 we recently reviewed. It's the more durable version of Sony's XBRITE display. The Z550's display is incredibly saturated and vibrant, and we expect the same of the TT. The resolution is 1366 x 768.

The notebook runs on a Centrino 2 processor technology with a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 CPU with an 800MHz FSB and 3 megs of level 2 cache. It comes with 3 gigs of RAM and 4 is max (higher end models come with 4 gigs). Graphics are courtesy of the Intel 4500HD (part of the Intel Centrino 2, aka Montevina platform).

The hard drive is a 5400rpm SATA drive (160 gigs), and there's gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR and Sprint EVDO rev. A on some models.

There's a Memory Stick slot, SD card slot and an ExpressCard /34 slot. As per usual, there's a fingerprint sensor and TPM for security.

A 256 gig solid state drive (SSD) is available on some models (actually 2 SATA 128 gig SSD drives), and you can get a TT minus the Blu-ray drive to save bucks.

The TT starts at $2,000 for a non-Blu-ray model and $2,700 for a Blu-ray machine.

Colors are carbon black, champagne and crimson red. The TT measures 10.99 x 7.87 x 0.93 inches.

The Vaio TT198 is the high end Blu-ray model with SSD and the TT160 is the more basic model with a dual layer DVD burner and a conventional hard drive.

Stay tuned for our review in the coming weeks!
