LG Versa for Verizon First Look with Photos
      #32778 - 02/27/09 08:12 PM

We've got the LG Versa VX9600 in-house for review and thought we'd share some eye candy with you while we work on our video and written reviews. The Versa is quite cool in person, and is uniquely designed. It's a slab-design touch screen phone that's relatively small (smaller than the iPhone and Samsung Eternity). Remove the back cover and you can clip on a leather textured case that has a QWERTY keyboard inside. The keyboard is pretty good, and certainly better than the on-screen keyboard whose keys are a bit small.

Above: the phone and case: notice the gold connectors on case and phone.

The phone knows when the case with keyboard are attached. Attach the case and the phone's display switches to landscape mode. Close the case and the screen turns off. Open the case and the screen turns on.

When the case is attached, the on-screen QWERTY keyboard doesn't pop up when in text fields. Without the case, the QWERTY on-screen keyboard pops up when the phone is in landscape mode.

What is the Versa? It's an EVDO phone offered by Verizon. It has a resistive touch screen that works decently, though it's a tad small for our tastes. It has a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a very good web browser that supports Flash. In fact, the Teleca web browser does a better job of rendering web sites in near-desktop fashion than any other Verizon feature phone. It supports Javascript with dHTML (i.e.: drop-down menus), SSL, cookies and caching. You can turn off Flash if you wish. The Versa works with the desktop version of and plays FLV Flash videos directly in its web browser, though the frame rate isn't impressive at approx. 10 to 15 fps with 2 out of 4 bars of EVDO.

Thankfully, you don't need it, but the LG Versa comes with a stylus that attaches via a short cord like the Samsung Omnia.

The Versa sells for $250 with a 2 year contract and $199 after rebate. It's available March 1.

Stay tuned for our full review and in the meantime feel free to post questions!
