lg Lotus vs Blackberry curve and why Sprint sucks
      #32782 - 02/28/09 04:46 PM

Just in case anyone is interested.

I have a blackberry curve and my wife has a lg lotus.
They both have features I like. And the lg really is a neat phone. It has lots of features I wish I had on my blackberry and vice versa. But as a personal phone I think the lotus has everything you would want.

The problems I encounter with both of these phones most often has nothing to do with the phones..... The problems are with my carrier which is Sprint, which is more like stumble, trip and fall than any sprinting. There are lots of apps out there that work great on my curve, but Sprint has intentionally blocked or refuses to upgrade its services that will allow the "not so smart" phones to use programing that was part of the phones software to begin with.

The lotus compared to my curve takes really exceptional pictures for a cell phone. Or rather my "curve" takes the WORST pictures of any phone I have ever owned including my last blackberry a 7500 which took pretty good pictures and videos. Seriously, I'm embarrassed to even send anyone a picture from my curve....they are that bad. If there is anyone out there that thinks their curve takes great pictures....please send me one...maybe its just my is 100% crappy every where every time.

My wife can "send" pictures and receive pictures to and from her Lotus. Its really simple and works really well

I can't do that with my blackberry.... When I asked sprint why I can't send and receive photos from my blackberry curve with the $40.00 data package add on.....they said its because my blackberry is a "computer" not a cell phone.... Duh.. Yeah right that makes sense.... Or could it be sprint won't use the format that allows blackberrys to send and receive pics?
Yeah...that might be the problem.

I use itookthisonmyphone as a app. for sending pictures from my also helps save the really limited and valuable disk space on my curve....

itookthisonmyphone works pretty well but still is a hassel compared to the lotus.

With the curve using sprint if I want to send pictures to someone...I have to send it as an email attachment and if someone sends me a picture I get a email from sprint with a link;... Then I have to go online to sprints website to view pictures people send me... If I want it ...then I have to download it from there.... At any rate...Its a significant PITA......and its just another BS thing Sprint knows is a problem but won't fix it. They will sell you a blackberry phone touting all of the features knowing full well what it WON'T DO before you bought it.

BTW...if you are useing the FREE blackberry messenger service... Meaning blackberry to blackberry......That works like a real cell phone carrier is supposed to.... you can send data, docs, contact lists, business cards, email, you name it. all kinds of different formats and data.... most of the drop menus on the black berry a tailored for bb to bb

My blackberry has had 2 different gps tracker apps on it. Blip the free version and now the new google "latitude" which is supposed to be part of the google "mobile" package apparently its within the "maps" download.

My blackberry works like a champ with either of them. As does the pc version. The real time GPS location is a little slow/behind as you are driving at 65+ but its close enough to know where your next exit from the interstate is. As you slow down it becomes really accurate.

But again...thanks to Sprint even though the Lotus was GPS capable AND came with Google Maps already installed. You can't use the gps "latitude" app. In fact it isn't even listed as one of the "services" offered that you have go through sprint and PAY to have it activated. All of the other options cost at least $5.00 a month..... thanks sprint.

I've already gone to google/latitude and tried to download the app three times. But it won't work on the lotus. If you find and select the option for "show my GPS location" You get a message that this option isn't available on this phone.

Which is bs considering if you go to Sprints website and click on GPS capable phones the LOTUS is on that short list.....what they don't say is....yes this LG Lotus was GPS capable when it left the LG factory, but our software disabled it so we can charge you for something your phone already did free of charge. Apparently thats because its a phone unlike my sad old blackberry which is a "computer".

The blackberry also comes with a sad but usable desktop application that allows you to upload and download via a usb port. The lotus comes with a usb connection cord...HA HA HA HA....and no software. Yep... thats right,...not disk one in the box..... Nor does Sprint or Lotus offer any. And I haven't found any 3rd party programs out there either.

After a few tries I was able to get "my computer" on my laptop to recognize the lotus media card as a removeable drive....and I think if you were a pretty sharp dude you could figure out how to up and download drag/drop information through that connection...It works that way on my "computer" curve phone.... I'm just not the sharp dude that can figure out the lotus problem

BUT.....If you want...You can pay SPRINT $5.00 (it used to be $2.00) a month for the PRIVILEGE...of having a program that will allow you to back up your databases, contact lists etc. Isn't that customer friendly of them...... Nice of them to raise the price....must be part of their new marketing program of "how can we possibly loose more market share..... I know....lets screw with our customers....

What prompted this post was the lotus needed an update... we couldn't download it because part of the problem was it kept turning off and rebooting.... and it wouldn't connect at all to any browser or internet connection.....

Customer service said we needed to wipe the phone and reset all of the defaults which of course means we loose everything that was put on the phone for the last 6 months including contact lists.....

Customer service said there isn't anyway to save the data on the lotus..... see....NO CD, NO SOFTWARE. Lucky thing for me I'm a little more technical than sprints TECHless support.

I found the lotus had a option for sending via bluetooth either one or all of the contacts from the phone to another bluetooth device.

Unfortunately I had issues trying to pair the lotus to my blackberry... they will both acknowledge each other exists. But the lotus won't play nice with the blackberry so even though there is an option on the lotus so send via "bluetooth" to my curve.... it fails every time even though the curve is listed as a trusted device on the lotus. My curve computer phone can send it to the lotus though....

I was able with out any help from sprints techless support get the update on the lotus, but even that hasn't fixed the rebooting problem which it continues to do regularily.

If I ever see the CEO of sprint walking the street talking crap about his companies "services".... It think I might have to grab his ass and drop him off in the woods somewhere.....just to see if he paid to have his GPS enabled.

So if there are any "sharp" dudes out there, here are the things I could use some help with:

How to get the lotus to "send" via bluetooth to my curve.

How to "backup", copy or transfer data etc, from the lotus to any other platform/device.

Is it possible to "turn on" the gps feature without having to pay sprint? I'd really like to get the google/latitude on the lotus, its a nice program and would be really helpful is you ever forget your phone somewhere... you can track right where it is from any computer. Not to mention it works in conjunction with the FREE google maps
