Video review: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM touch screen S60 smartphone
      #33078 - 04/11/09 09:04 PM

Update: Read our full Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review here.

It's touch screen week here at MobileTechReview and now we've got the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, otherwise known as "the Tube" in for review. This is the US version that has 3G HSDPA on the US ATT 850/1900MHz bands and it carries a US warranty. This $399 GSM smartphone is sold unlocked for use with any GSM carrier and does not require a contract.

This is Nokia's first touch screen S60 smartphone and it runs S60 5th Edition. The upcoming Nokia N97 will also run S60 5th Edition, and the Nokia 5800 provides a nice taste of things to come, as well as a more affordable alternative to the pricey N97. It has a resistive touch screen that works with fingers and stylus (both a traditional stylus and a guitar pick stylus are included in the box). You really don't need to use the stylus unless you want to use handwriting recognition. Overall, the touch screen works well, though there are places where you're forced to use scroll bars rather than simply dragging a finger across a list or palette of icons (that's so 90s).

The large QWERTY keyboard. There are also a compact QWERTY and alphanumeric keyboards.

The 640 x 360 pixel widescreen display is awesome for web browsing using Nokia's Webkit-based browser and watching wide screen movies. The Nokia 5800 has Flash Lite 3 so it can play YouTube videos and it does a good job of it, even over 3G HSDPA on AT&T's network.

At 3.8 ounces, the Nokia is easy to pocket and it's smaller than the iPhone 3G. It's made of plastic.

Other features and specs include:
GPS with Nokia Maps
WiFi 802.11b/g
Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR with A2DP stereo
3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss autofocus lens that can shoot video up to VGA @30fps.
The usual suite of Nokia S60 smartphone applications including PIM apps, music player, video player, photo viewer, FM radio and more.

Here's our video review:

We'll publish our full written review next week. In the meantime please feel free to post questions
