RIM BlackBerry unseats iPhone as number 1 seller
      #33197 - 05/04/09 02:35 PM

According to the folks at the NPD Group, who do research on sales figures and trends for phone sales, RIM's BlackBerry line has unseated the iPhone for the number one spot in Q1 2009 for consumer sales. In fact, RIM takes 3 of the top five spots. NPD suggests that Verizon's aggressive buy-one-get-one-free campaign did the trick to nudge the 'Berries to the top. RIM has nearly 50% of the smartphone market, up 15% from the prior quarter.

For Q1 2009, here's the sales ranking:
1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
5. T-Mobile G1

(cudos to the G1 making the top 5 list!)

In general, smartphone sales now account for 23% of phone sales, up from 17% in Q1 2008. That's impressive since the economy is tanked and smartphones generally cost more and can require more expensive data plans.

Methodology: The NPD Group compiles and analyzes mobile device sales data
based on more than 150,000 completed online consumer research surveys
each month. Surveys are based on a nationally balanced and demographically
representative sample, and results are projected to represent the entire
population of U.S. consumers. Note: Sales figures do not include
corporate/enterprise mobile phone sales.
