iPhone Game Review: MONOPOLY Here and Now: The World Edition
Reviewed by Leah Jennings

MONOPOLY Here and Now: The World Edition is like the classic Monopoly game with a global twist. It maintains classic parts of the game in the rules and gameplay, but totally broke out something new on the designs and properties.

For those of you who don't know what Monopoly is, here?s a brief summary. Monopoly is a board game in which you try to monopolize the properties and force your opponents into bankruptcy. You can buy, sell, trade, and mortgage properties to further yourself in the game. If your opponent lands on one of your properties, they have to pay rent to you. You can build houses and eventually hotels on your properties to increase rent, and therefore increase the money you get when your opponent lands on it. There are other factors in the game that can help or hinder your gameplay: Community Chest and Chance cards, different spaces on the board, and even rolling doubles can hinder you.

The currency in the world edition is millions (M) and thousands (K), which is confusing when you start playing the game. The properties around the board are global cities, like Montreal for Boardwalk, and Riga for Park Place. You don?t have the option to play classic Monopoly, but there are other options that are nice. You can play any combination of humans/computers up to four players, which is good if you want to show off your Monopoly skills to your friends. You can also play against friends in WiFi Multiplayer mode. The house rules can also be changed, i.e. turning on and off the house/hotel limit, passing GO salary, and number of properties divided up at start.

The 3D graphics are a little choppy when there?s a lot going on, but still nice to have when viewing different angles of the board. You can choose from 5 different areas to play the game in. There are 3 options for music: Jazz, Lounge, and your iPod, which I prefer.

Overall if you like playing variations of the Monopoly game, then you?ll enjoy this game. If you like sticking to the classic Monopoly, then this probably isn?t what you?re looking for.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- 3D, a little choppy, but overall very nicely done.
Sound: -3.5- Jazz, Lounge, or your iPod...your choice.
Controls: -4- Very easy to learn, easy to use.
Gameplay: -4- Not the classic Monopoly most love, but still a good variation.

Playing Hints and Tips:

-Montreal and Riga (Boardwalk/Park Place) are the most valuable properties, if you get one, don?t trade it. When you get hotels on those properties, they are extremely high in rent so you?ll either get paid very well, or probably go bankrupt.

-Don?t be frivolous with your money, spend it wisely.

-Always try to get more out of a trade then you?re giving. If you don?t like the trade being offered, don?t take it.

-If you are short on cash, don?t pay to get out of jail, you can attempt to roll doubles instead.

I like this game. It's a polished implementation. I think it's time to play it again!
