iPhone Game Review: Mr. Driller Reviewed by Leah Jennings
Mr. Driller is a classic arcade-style game that is very addictive and hard to put down.
Mr. Driller's town has been overrun by mysterious colored blocks and he must get to the bottom of it...literally!! Armed with his mighty drill, Mr. Driller must drill through all of the blocks and find the source to save the town!!
Mr. Driller has 3 game modes: Arcade, Survival, and Time Attack. In every mode, each row of blocks across represents 1m to give you an idea how difficult it is. In Arcade mode, you can choose 500m (Beginners) or 1000m (Experts). You have to dig through all 500 or 1000m, while trying to keep your air tank full and not getting squished by the falling blocks. Luckily, there are air capsules you can collect to keep your air tank full. You have only 3 lives, so watch out for those falling rocks and keep an eye on your air tank. The blocks fall when you remove a block that the top blocks were resting on. If you succeed in either beginner or expert levels, there is a high scoreboard to put your name on. And you can even share your glory with your friends via Facebook connect.
In Survival mode there are also difficulty levels from Normal, Hard, and Expert. Your goal is to last as long as possible. You still have to collect air capsules, but the hard part is there are no extra lives. You die, the game ends. In Time Attack mode (my favorite, there?s no air in this mode) you can choose different courses, and even unlock new courses. Although there are no air capsules in this mode, you are not left out cold: you get to collect stopwatches which reduce your completion time as you are trying to beat the goal time.
The game does have quite a few options you can change, which does make the game customizible. Arcade mode settings include changing the difficulty of the 500 and 1000m levels, and can reduce or increase the number of extra lives. You can even change the controls from the standard D-Pad to Swipe or Accelerometer, whichever fits your style of play.
Graphics and Sound
Graphics are simple, arcade graphics. Anime is the recurring theme throughout the game, as seen in the characters and background images. I really enjoy the music in this game, which is a rare thing. The music is carefully arranged and well suited with the gameplay. It?s sad when it needs to be, and yet triumphant at other times. The sound effects are cool, with a bubble bursting sound when you drill blocks.
Mr. Driller is a revolution in modern arcade style games, keeping the classic arcade style fusing it with a modern look and feel. Perfect for nostalgia arcade gamers and the new generation of gamers looking for something different yet fun.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Graphics: -4- Arcade, anime style. Very polished. Sound: -4- No iPod, but the music in the game definitely makes up for it, nice range of sound effects and music styles. Controls: -3.5- Controls are easy to understand, but sometimes it?s easy for your thumb to lose the D-Pad. Gameplay: -4.5- Absolutely will play this game again, very challenging and addictive.
Playing Hints and Tips:
-Look for pockets you can stand in to drill down without having to worry about blocks falling on you.
-Time Attack mode is comprised of combining your speed and collecting the stopwatches, otherwise you?ll never make the high score list.
-In Survival and Arcade make sure you collect your air capsules. The drilling is easy compared to keeping your air tank full.
