iPhone Game Review: Bang - Pharaoh Wrath
Reviewed by JadeDragon

Gamers who can pass beyond the corny title and a cheesy story will find themselves a fun physics game in Bang - Pharaoh Wrath. The game's back story: the terrorists are trying to break into Pharaoh's tomb and steal the treasures, and that upsets the Pharaoh's spirit. As the Pharaoh, you must eliminate the terrorists with their own cannon while avoid hurting the innocent civilians. OK, we know there were tomb raiders as far back as ancient times; they don't have to be terrorists. And haven't they stopped using cannons long ago? Luckily the gameplay is solid, creative and addictive.

Bang ? Pharaoh?s Wrath is a physics game where you shoot cannon balls to blow up or bring down the bad guys (their heads, really) from high platforms, behind blocks or between walls. Tap the screen to shoot the cannon balls, and the further you aim the further and faster the cannon balls fly. The game allows you to use walls, moving platforms, large logs and blocks to bounce the cannon balls to find their aims. And in some cases, you can even use the cannon balls themselves to bounce and roll into positions. The cannon balls will arm themselves as soon as they touch anything and will explode in three counts. They will need to be very close to the target to kill. Other than cannon explosions, falling into the abyss can kill as well. So if you can get the heads rolling into the gap, you will achieve the goal even without the cannon balls.

To make things more interesting, there are civilians in the picture along with the baddies. And wouldn?t you know it, the civilians are always the easier targets while the bad guys are hidden in those hard-to-get places. The good news is that the game won?t end if you accidentally kill the civilians, but it won?t reward you with high bonuses. The game has a timer and number of cannons used in each levels. If you use fewer cannons in short period of time without killing any civilians to complete the level, you will get huge bonus points which add to your overall scores.

There are total of 40 levels in Bang ? Pharaoh Wrath. The game offers two playing modes: Free play and Challenge play. In Free play, you can use as many cannon balls and take as long as you need to kill all the bad guys in each level. And you can pick up from any of previously completed level from the level map. The faster you finish a level with fewer cannons and fewer civilian casualties the higher your final score. In Challenge mode however there are limits in both time and number of cannon balls you can use to complete the levels. When either of them runs out, the game ends.

Bang ? Pharaoh Wrath uses touch control to shoot cannon balls. The control is very responsive. The movements of the cannons, blocks and heads have a natural gravity feel which makes the gameplay smooth and consistent. The game has both a local scoreboard and a global scoreboard.

The graphics in Bang ? Pharaoh Wrath look simple but clear. The layouts in levels could have been more difficult and more complex, but the game is designed for anyone to just pick it up and play. Menu, Option and scoreboard screens fit the style of the game design.

Background music in the game has the typical Egyptian desert style but doesn?t have much variety. You can turn on and off the BGM but there isn?t a built-in option to add your own iPod music. Sound effects are cute and match the actions well.

Bang ? Pharaoh Wrath is a fun game. The levels are not very hard which makes the game great for those who just want to pick it up and play without doing a lot of thinking. The game has 40 levels and 2 game modes, and very responsive controls. The physics actions are smooth and consistent. Other than the cheesy name and the back story, this game shows great creativity and gives you addictive gameplay.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- Simple graphics but clean and clear, serve the purpose.
Sound: -3.5- Cool BGM and cute sound effects, but not a lot of them.
Controls: -4.5- Touch control is responsive and no learning curve.
Gameplay: -4.5- Though not very tough, 40 levels and 2 game modes should keep you busy for a while. You will want to replay the game after you finish.

Playing Hints and Tips:

-In the Free play mode, if you get into a situation where you can?t easily get the bad guy, use blitz. Just shoot 5 balls and you might get lucky.

-It?s hard to avoid the civilians some times, but being conservative on aiming the balls will help. When uncertain, try a soft shot to see where the cannons will land first.
