What's in a name: Crunchpad reborn as the JooJoo web pad
      #35345 - 12/07/09 12:52 PM

OK, has there ever been a worse name than the JooJoo? Besides the fact it's sending the twitter community into paroxysms of poo poo, boo hoo and coo coo jokes, joo joo is generally taken to mean bad magic. But Fusion Garage's CEO says it just means magic and he finds their new product just that. For those who haven't followed the saga, TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington was working with Fusion Garage to develop this new wunderkind webpad. It was supposed to be wildly affordable (significantly under $500) yet have a huge touch screen and Internet access. Next to the so far vaporware Apple pad, it was the hottest prospect on the Net. Fusion Garage said tough joo joo to you and decided to market and sell the webpad on their own. That caused a flutter of wows and tsk-tsks on the Net last week, so Fusion Garage's CEO held a webcast this morning to give their side of the story and intro the device.

The JooJoo is a web pad that boots directly into a web browser in 9 seconds. There is no accessible OS or other applications, though Linux is in there. It will sell for $499 starting December 11, 2009. That sounds more than a little expensive for a single purpose device. Especially when you can get an HP TouchSmart tablet notebook with a capacitive display and an OS and applications for $750.

The JooJoo has a 12.1" capacitive touch screen, a 4 gig SSD drive, an accelerometer and enough graphics processing power to handle Flash video playback from the likes of Hulu. It has 5 hours of battery life and WiFi for connectivity. No 3G, none, nada, zip.

The product website is www.thejoojoo.com
