Video review: Samsung Mondi Windows Mobile Handheld with WiMAX
      #35386 - 12/11/09 04:19 PM

The Samsung Mondi isn't a phone but rather a MID (mobile Internet device). For those of you who've been in the tech game for a decade or just a bit less, it's the spiritual successor to the Samsung Nexio handheld. The Mondi features WiMAX, a fast wireless standard that's still in the toddler stages here in the US. Currently Clearwire provides the service under the name and they cover approximately 16 US cities with more to come. Time Warner and Sprint are also entering the WiMAX space.

The Mondi sells for $500 and is available at some Best Buy locations and Clear also sells it (with a WiMAX contract). WiMAX services starts at $30/month and offers speeds similar to WiFi 802.11b (4.0 Mbps to 6.0 Mbps). The Mondi has a 4.3" resistive touch screen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Classic (since it's not a phone, it's not the Pro edition) and has 4 gigs of storage, DivX support, Samsung's own ARM11 family CPU that clocks up to 800MHz and a 3MP camera. There's WiFi to fall back on and the Mondi has a GPS with Route 66 mapping software. You can install Skype and make VoIP calls.

The Mondi is for those who need the Net and lightweight computing on the go but don't want to carry a notebook. It can run 4 to5 hours on a charge. WiMAX's biggest problem are the newer cellular data services like LTE (Verizon, not yet deployed), 7.2 Mbps HSDPA (deploying on AT&T and T-Mobile right now) and 21Mbps HSPA+ coming from T-Mobile starting next year (already in trials in Philly).

Here's our video review of the Mondi:
