Alex the ebook reader from Spring Design finds a new home with Borders Books
      #35630 - 01/08/10 03:00 AM

You might recall the ugly intellectual property and legal mess that started when Barnes and Noble decided to sell the Nook, whose design looks decidedly like Spring Design's Alex ebook reader, minus Spring Design (who claims to have been in agreement with Barnes and Noble to design the bookseller's ebook reader).

The folks at Spring Design have taken their goods elsewhere and have just announced their partnership with Barnes and Nobles' competitor, Borders, for an eBook store powered by Kobo on the new dual display Alex eReader later this year. The agreement in principle follows a recent announcement that Borders will launch a new eBook store on as well as Borders-branded mobile eBook applications, powered by Kobo. The new Borders-branded eBook store will offer more than two million titles.

Borders owns a significant interest in, formerly known as Shortcovers. We imagine Alex is saying "take that!" to Barnes and Noble right about now.

Like the Nook, Alex has an e-ink display for reading books and a capacitive touch screen for control and navigation. It's powered by Android. Alex is compatible with ePUB books, including DRM ePUB books sold by Kobo, and it works with Google's large selection of downloadable public domain non-DRM titles.
