RadioShack DigiTraveler GPS on an iPAQ 3900 series
      #3602 - 10/31/02 07:13 AM

Help!! I have a 3900 series iPAQ. The RadioShack personnel assure me that their RadioShack DigiTraveler GPS can be used with this type of PDA. I can't get the PDA to initialize or even recognize the GPS. The instructions for the GPS tell the user to setup the GPS on COM1. The only options I can find are for COM3 and COM4. Anybody out there that can help me with this one?? email: njfwhtl@aol.com.

I have heard that people were able to use the RadioShack GPS for their iPAQs, though nobody specifically said they were using 3900 series.

I've used a few GPS solutions for PDAs, but not this one. The RadioShack one is probably the very few that doesn't have a SiRF chipset in it. If you want to read more about this chipset, go to:

http://www.sirf.com/sirfarch.html

In any case, according to their user manual you should be able to install it easily, though I have a feel this program might be for ARM only:

While I can't help you with COM1 problems as I haven't gone through the installation process myself, just to double check a few things: battery installed, use the correct serial cable (it seems that RadioShack sells cables fit for different devices), the Xmap Handheld CD isn't scrashed. Check Delmore site for XScale support:

http://www.delorme.com/xmaphandheld/default.asp

If you still can't get it to work or it doesn't support XScale, look for GPS solutions for iPAQ 3900 here:

good luck!

Another thing to check about COM1 port is to see if you have a keyboard turned on. If you do, turn off the keyboard and try to run the GPS again.
