The IREX DR800SG digital eBook Reader is Finally coming
      #36040 - 02/18/10 10:01 AM

For those of you who like to live a little large, but not as large as the Kindle DX, there's the 7.1" Sony Reader Daily Edition and now (or really soon) the IREX DR800SG-US. Despite the lackluster name, the US version of the IREX has it's appeal: it's less expensive than their Euro products(IREX is based in the Netherlands and works in the eInk technology business) and will sell for $399, same as the Sony PRS-900. The IREX has been on BestBuy's website for some time, but now you can actually hit the buy button with a listed 1 to 2 day ship time.

Other features include an 8.1" eInk display with a Wacom digitizer. This works like a tablet PC and you'll use the special EMR pen to interact with the screen rather than your finger. This is generally an expensive technology so we're impressed IREX got it into a product at this price. The benefit is that the Wacom digitizer doesn't mess with display clarity like Sony's touch screens do on the PRS-600 and PRS-900.

The strange this is that there's no scribbling support yet (that's supposed to be coming), and there's no PDF zooming (that *might* be coming but no promises we'll ever see it). For a large display reader with a Wacom pen, you'd think these would have been the first things they put into the reader.

The IREX supports DRM and non-DRM ePUB and PDF files as well as PDB books and it will work with Barnes & Noble's bookstore and eBooks. Nice. It has a web browser but weren't not sure how much it does besides go to the B&N bookstore.

The IREX DR800SG has Verizon 3G for wireless connectivity and comes with a 2 gig SD card.

It weighs 12.7 ounces and measures 7.6 x 4.9 x 0.4 inches.

Are we going to bring you an in-depth review? You bet, look for it next week!
