Video review: Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Tablet
      #36233 - 03/04/10 05:37 PM

Lenovo's ThinkPad X201 convertible tablet PC is now available for order on their website. The X201 features a serious CPU bump from the X200 and offers three display options: the standard wide-view LED backlit LCD (270 nit brightness), the multi-touch plus active digitizer and the outdoor viewable (400 nit brightness) option.

The standard machine configuration includes a 2.13GHz Intel Core i7 640LM low power dual core, 4 thread CPU that can ramp up to 2.9GHz. supports virtualization and consumes on 25 watts (that's pretty low).

It uses DDR3 1066MHz RAM up to 8 gigs, has Intel GMA HD integrated graphics and comes with Intel WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth and gigabit Ethernet. Mobile Broadband is optional.

Here's our 9 minute video review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X201 tablet. It's no doubt a lust-worthy tablet in terms of build quality and display. Ours has the outdoor viewable option, and we take it outside under sunny skies to test it out. We also take a walk around the machine and compare it with the HP Touchsmart TM2 which costs half the price but can't compete when it comes to display quality.

Our full written review will come next week. Feel free to post questions

Thanks for the nice review. I would have liked to see the TM2 in the shade and sunlight in comparison to the X201t, because I am also interested in that model.

Actually I think all video reviews of tablet PCs should have a video section on outdoor viewability, even if they do not have a special screen option.

The TM2 is an awesome tablet given the price, but HP doesn't even offer an outdoor viewable option. Without that option, you're pretty much lost in the sun (the same is true of non-tablet standard notebooks).

That's something you see more on business notebooks like the ThinkPad, some HP EliteBooks and etc. The TM2 washes out a lot in the sun and the high gloss display glares-- it's really not a good choice for outdoor use. Since standard notebooks/tablets aren't terribly viewable in the sun, we only video the ones that actually are meant for use outdoors. That $325 outdoor viewable option on the ThinkPad makes a huge difference!
