iPhone Game Review: Zenonia 2

iPhone Game Review: Zenonia 2
Reviewed by Dave Koo

Zenonia 2 is a follow up game to the extremely popular Zenonia classic RPG but with much more enhanced graphics. Like the first Zenonia game, Zenonia 2 is a classic action RPG full of quests, bosses, and features 152 different maps, 98 quests, and an epic storyline for each of the four characters.

Gameplay

There are two game modes in Zenonia 2; one is the classic story RPG gameplay and the other is an online Player versus Player (PvP). In story mode you choose one of 4 characters in Zenonia 2. The characters cover all RPG class categories: you?ve got a Paladin named Lu, a Warrior named Daza, a shooter named Ecne, and a Mage with the name of Morpice. The game also offers 3 difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, or Hell Mode. Like any RPG, Zenonia 2 has a good number of essential items to help you on your journey. These items include potions, weapons, armor and food to help stop hunger (yes you actually can get hungry in this game).

When you defeat a certain number of monsters you level up and here's where things get interesting. Instead of automatically leveling up your character?s stats, you can make choices yourself on how to level up. So if you like having tons of attack strength then put in some attack points. Since players have their own preferred styles of playing the game, the more you vary in the point scheme the more the gameplay is different. This encourages replays as players would want to experience very different gameplay each time.

The only annoying thing in the game comes in the form of a passive enemy. Zenonia 2 has a large number of enemies and most of them are fine. But one particular enemy adds tedium to the gameplay, and that?s the poison plant. They spew poison at you, which you should dodge quickly or your character might end up dying 5 seconds later even though you are 4 levels higher than it. So for those who rather die fighting a formidable warrior or a powerful mage, you see the poison plant you run.

Zenonia 2 has reasonably good controls. For players with huge hands, they might struggle to move the characters around since the control pad is too small and a bit glitchy. Thankfully the developers have provided the option to make the D-pad bigger or smaller instead of leaving you with just the default setting. The game also allows you to move the D-pad and the attack button to places of your choice which is an innovative design.

Graphics

A game with Chibi style graphics, what more could you wish for? At least if you are fan of the Chibi style manga and anime. Smooth and Elegant, those are the only 2 words that can describe Zenonia 2?s graphics. With its diminutive little characters, ferocious monsters, and one epic Dragon as last boss, the game truly shows off the Zenonia world in its own unique fashion. The graphics are eye catching, beautifully drawn and awesomely colored. Movements and battles are smooth, and menus screens and animations look polished.

Sound

Music is very enjoyable the first time you hear it and even 3 days later I still enjoy it. Each piece of music seems to fit in with the surrounding, for example, in an ice dungeon you will hear icy cool and smooth sound tracks while in lava caves the music turned dark and heavy. The music editor did a great job at looping the music to fit the gameplay perfectly.

Conclusion

Overall Zenonia 2 is a great RPG with tremendous graphics and equally impressive music and sound. Outshining the first Zenonia in many aspects, this game will become one of the best RPG on the iPhone platform. It?s user-friendly for novice players to pick it up and play, and offers a huge depth to satisfy hardcore RPG players. With 98 quests, it will take some time to play through the game; and with 4 different characters to play and endless possibilities of modifying each character, the replay value is tremendous. It?s well worth the price.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: - 5 - Very elegant and unique using chibi style characters.

Sound: - 5 - Very soothing and fits with the environment very well.
Controls: - 5 - Customizable controls and placement is very innovative.
Gameplay: - 4.5 - Very deep gameplay and huge replay value, but the poison plant can ruin a good thing in a hurry.

Playing Hints and Tips:

Try to choose the far range characters since enemies will not reach you if you're 10 feet away just blasting them. Also buy lots of potions so you can heal when necessary.

I've seen several RPGs on the iPhone. The Zenonia series are really good. They have the classic RPG gameplay that feels meaty, and you feel like you are really grinding it out. Worth checking them out.
