iPad Game Review: Enigmo Deluxe
Reviewed by Shaun Price

Enigmo is a classic for any early iPhone user out there: it was one of the first games released out there (right along SMB) so it holds a special place in all our hearts. Now Pangea has brought the game to the iPad as Enigmo Deluxe with improved graphics and controls that are optimized for the large screen, and a very nifty level editor that can expand the game infinitely.

If this is the first time you've heard of the Enigmo games, the basic gameplay mechanic involves placing different things in the game world to route liquid from the origin dropper to the jar of the same color. This can mean placing a platform to change the angle of the liquid that?s falling, then placing a bumper to bounce the liquid higher, then placing a sponge to collect the liquid and drip it in to the jar. You have to get 40 drops into each jar in order to complete the level.

So what?s so special about Enigmo Deluxe on the iPad? Well, for starters, the game feels incredibly awesome using a touch screen. On the iPhone it was already smooth and tight, but on the iPad it?s even better thanks to the larger screen. While the gameplay itself is kept the same as the iPhone / Mac version, the iPad version adds a native level editor which means limitless expansions. With the level editor you can create whole new levels, or edit the levels from existing level packs.

The level creator also allows you to share your creations with any other version of Enigmo via the File Sharing functionality in iTunes. These level packs are even cross-platform, so you can send your levels to a friend who has the desktop version or vice versa. A number of third party level packs are already included, and if you're the kind of person who gets in to creating and trading custom created levels, you will easily get sucked in to Enigmo Deluxe. The only thing that?s missing in Enigmo Deluxe is the integration of a global scoreboard.

The graphics are very detailed. As you already know if you?ve touched Enigmo before that the physics in the game is absolutely amazing. Graphics are polished and the animations smooth. With the iPad being able to zoom into the level and just see the detail of each piece, you will love checking out every level. The touch controls are very responsive with the added screen real estate, and it makes completing the level just a little easier.

The Sound FX for Enigmo Deluxe was realistic and amazingly detailed. However, It was immensely overshadowed by the Latin style guitar music that played in the background. If there had been iPod integration it would have been a lot more enjoyable.

Enigmo is a classic title on all the iDevices. The casual puzzle lovers and past Enigmo players will enjoy the iPad version. Enigmo Deluxe is definitely worth the money and with over 400 puzzles it definitely has a good replay value. After you play it for a while, keep an eye out for Enigmo 2 which will look awesome on the iPad.
