Barnes & Noble growing the Nook section in their stores
      #38061 - 07/30/10 10:07 AM

It seems that things are looking rosy not just for Amazon but for Barnes and Noble too when it comes to ebook reader sales and related ebook sales. In a press release today, they said that the Nook continues to be their best selling item (they're coy about numbers, just like Amazon), and the reader is generating juicy revenue. Among Barnes and Noble members (those folks who pick up a member card for discounts and promos), the company has seen an approximately 20 percent increase in their combined digital and physical spend since purchasing a Nook and over a 70 percent increase on a unit basis.

So it makes perfect sense to dedicate more of their brick and mortar store space to the Nook. This summer and fall they're expanding the Nook section in stores to 1,000 sq. feet, and these areas will be equipped with several live Nook ereader demo units, a large flat panel display running video demos and a large selection of accessories (they do have a lovely selection of cases). B&N already offers free WiFi for Nook users and you can read their digital titles when in store using your Nook.

The Nook3G is approaching the year mark, so that's fast progress. B&N has lowered the price of the nook with 3G to $199, and recently introduced the WiFi only Nook for $149. They state that 199 of 205 New York Times best sellers are available for purchase and download in ebook format. And don't forget they have reader applications for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, the HTC HD2 and Android.

Excellent Lisa!
Most of the WiFi Nooks will have the 1.4 software pre-installed; the post I created on comparison of the Nook-Kindle and Sony Daily Edition had me forget to state the ease of replacement of the battery and SD Card update.
Also; the Nook is "not just for B+N but an outreach to sideload, and Google EPub; so many good things about the Nook and it's non restrictive nature vs only Amazon content.

Agreed. The one thing I really don't like about the Kindle is the lack of support for library books and ePub. They're getting a little evil-empireish with their attempts to lock customers into Amazon purchases. The Nook, Sony Readers, Kobo and the Alex reader are much more open in that respect. And B&N has a very competitive online ebook store too.

Totally agree Lisa; lastly the SD slot is upgradeable to 16 MB(Nook) not upgradeable for the Kindle, and 32MB for the Sony Daily Edition.
