iPhone Game Review: Plunderland Reviewed by SpaZtrigger
In Plunderland you must guide the wannabe pirates to treasure, fend off the navy, and beat up the native and sea monsters to steal their treasure. What other game brings this kind of pirate experience?
Some people want to be farmers others want to be famous cooks, but in Plunderland, your sole job is to practice the art of becoming the best Pirates. With a pathetic tiny little boat, you start your pirating career on the rough seas and face dangers monsters and navy soldiers. But soon you find yourself collecting gold, buying new ships, beefing up your weapons while your fame spreads as your treasure mounts. As you may have expected, Plunderland offers plenty of action: explosions, body tossing (ragdoll engine included), and of course there is plenty of ship sinking. All that hard work leads to one ting: get enough gold to finish the level. To do this you have to sink and destroy your enemy?s ships, destroy islander?s totem pole or find hidden treasure chests tucked away on the island somewhere. With some luck you will fight some worthy battles, plunder some islands and get rich and complete the levels. Then, you will face a boss, fun!
There are three power ups in Plunderland that help you stay alive and grab as much treasure as you can find, and you can unlock them with bowsprits, or you might just get luck and stumble upon a power up while sailing the sever seas. The 3 power ups are ghostly power (thank you Captain Peg Leg!), an explosive cannon ball and powerful cannon ball. The ghostly power is quite unique, it can break ships apart including your own ship. With many upgrades and leveling up, Plunderland is fun and well crafted. But it?s the enemy design that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In a 2D side scrolling fashion, enemies come at you fast and prepared, and keep the gameplay fresh.
The controls in Plunderland is unique in almost every aspect. The game takes advantage of the capabilities of the iPhone: you tilt to move and you fire cannon balls using the touch screen. To fire the cannon balls you have to tap on the ship and drag you finger to the opposite direction of where you want to shoot. The controls support multi-touch also, and this means you can tap, drag and swipe all at once. The controls work smoothly without glitches.
What happens when wannabe pirates leave their jobs and board a haunted ship? Plunderland is what you get! Plunderland may look like your average 2-D game, but it isn?t; not by a long-shot. Plunderland has very well crafted graphics and looks very polished under a simplistic graphics style. The navy looks authentic, the wannabes look like real pirates, and the last boss looks terrifying. Actions move smoothly and the ragdoll engine is a nice touch.
Though Plunderland has both background music and sound FX, sound FX by far outshines the music in the game. There are only a couple of pieces of music (when you?re near islanders and the last boss theme), but almost every action in the game has some kind of sound effect attached to it, and they add a lot to the gameplay. From waves to the cannon shots, Plunderland has one of the best Sound FX we've ever experienced. If you prefer your own pirate music, you can play iPod tunes.
Plunderland is one of the finest games made for the iPhone with hundreds of levels of fun gameplay, interesting monster and character design and outstanding sound FX. If pirate theme is your thing, Plunderland is a must play title that offers non-stop action yet doesn?t take itself too seriously.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Graphics: - 5 - Well crafted graphics, simple yet stylish. Sound: - 4.5 - Great sound FX, not a lot of music. Controls: - 5 - Very unique controls, expertly uses all of the iPhone features. Gameplay: - 5 - Lots of levels with beefy gameplay.
Playing Hints and Tips:
- Don?t forget there are code piece secrets on every level.
- Always move your ship at top speed before firing your cannons because this will greatly improve the distance of the cannon ball allowing you to beat one very annoying level.
This is the 3rd game i got for my new iphone. Brilliant!! Excellent game play and great re-playability.
Spaztrigger has done a good job reviewing the game, and that's not all, there are so many secrets in the game, you can only find out by playing it. If you spent $50 for Golden Axe in the 90s, you should get this.
$2.99 for this game a MUST buy for iphone.
