Video review: Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on AT&T
      #38294 - 08/21/10 11:47 AM

We reviewed the non-carrier version of the US Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a way back in April of this year, and a lot of Android superphones have passed under the bridge since then. In April, the X10 was among only three very high end Android smartphones that had ATT 3G (the other two were the Nexus One and Acer Liquid). In fact, high end GSM offerings in general were still rare in the US.

That's all changed thanks to the army of Samsung Galaxy S phones that have hit and will hit the US. On AT&T we have the excellent Samsung Captivate that sells for $50 more than the Xperia with contact. We have to say the Captivate is faster, though they both have a 1GHz CPU, and part of that is likely due to the positively ancient Android OS 1.6 that the Xperia still ships with (we'd hoped it would move up to 2.1 by the time a US carrier version was released).

Little has changed other than AT&T's added apps, and you can take a look at our original Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a review to get the skinny on the phone. The Xperia has a 1GHz CPU, 854 x 480 pixel 4" capacitive display, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and a strong 8.1 megapixel camera (SE has very good cameras). Carrier software includes AT&T Navigator and Maps, their WiFi hotspot finder, Mobile Banking, Yellow Pages Mobile and Where.

Strong points vs. the Captivate? Better reception, that Euro build quality and design aesthetic and camera. The Captivate wins on speed, having a much newer version of the Android OS and a stunning Super AMOLED display.

Here's our video review where we take a look at the Xperia X10 and test out Sony Ericsson's Mediascape and Timescape software for multimedia and social networking. We also look at the web browser and AT&T's streaming video service along with a few other goodies.
