Video review: Toshiba Libretto W105
      #38476 - 09/10/10 07:51 PM

For Toshiba's 25th anniversary, they decided to take a concept gadget to market in the guise of the limited edition Toshiba Libretto W105 (also known as the Libretto W100). This is a very small notebook computer in the Libretto tradition, but it breaks wildly from the norm with its dual 7" capacitive displays. Think of the Microsoft Courier concept: a dual screen, super-portable computer running Windows 7 Home Edition. You can use both displays as a dual monitor extended desktop and you can type using one of 6 virtual keyboards. There's also a very functional virtual mouse pad!

The 1.8 lb. Libretto is no netbook thanks to a dual core Pentium SU5400 1.2GHz CPU with Intel HD graphics and 2 gigs of RAM. It handles video playback easily (on either or both displays!) and streams Hulu like nobody's business. The drawback is that the fan is always on and it's pretty loud. That CPU heat blasts out of a vent on the top edge and the computer's guts are in the top half (when positioned in laptop mode).

The Libretto has a 62 gig SATA SSD drive, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and an excellent webcam with face recognition for login. If you decide you want one, you'd best hunt one down now from the very few online retailers that have them left. When Amazon and Toshiba opened up pre-orders several weeks ago, the Libretto sold out in a day. No word if they'll make a second run since this is a limited edition. Keep in mind it's not cheap at $1,099.
