Verizon Wireless Fivespot - global WiFi hotspot with 3G works on GSM and CDMA
      #38709 - 10/04/10 03:18 PM

Many of us know that the cellular network technology Verizon and Sprint use, CDMA, isn't used in Europe nor in much of Asia. That's why Verizon Wireless releases occasional global products that work on CDMA networks and have a SIM card slot for joy on GSM networks. Their latest is the Verizon Wireless Fivespot, a nifty little pocketable 3G modem with WiFi that acts as a WiFi hotspot. It comes with a pre-installed SIM card and we assume it's Verizon's part owner, Vodafone's SIM card.

The mobile hotspot is made by ZTE and it works on CDMA 1x/EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. 0 networks as well as 3G WCDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA networks on the 850/1900/2100MHz bands. It's interesting that two of those bands, 850 and 1900, are used by AT&T here in the US while 2100MHz is used abroad. I doubt that it will let you roam on AT&T's 3G network, but we'll hold our tongue until we have a review unit. The hotspot also works on GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands, but we know you're desperate when your riding on EDGE.

The Fivespot will be available on Oct. 7 for $99 after a $100 rebate with a 2 year contract.

Data package pricing:

$39.99 monthly access for 250 MB monthly allowance and $0.10/MB overage
$59.99 monthly access for 5 GB monthly allowance and $0.05/MB overage
Prepaid Mobile Broadband plans are also available:
$15 for 100 MB (one day of use)
$30 for 300 MB (one week of use)
$50 for 1 GB (30 days of use)
$80 for 5 GB (30 days of use)
