Ladies and Gents, strap on your weapons, it's time to shoot up some baddies.
In Death Cop by Blue Shadow Games, you pilot one of three playable Mechs in order to set things straight, enforce justice and basically just shoot the living daylights out of anything that stands in your way. There are 16 missions in this straightforward shooter game and each mission is quite different from the others. In fact, the variety of the missions is wider than any Dual-Stick shooter game we?ve seen for the iOS.
In the majority of missions, you control your Mech using the usual twin stick controls, (left stick to move, right to aim and fire). There are two buttons on either side of each screen to switch weapons, and moving the camera is controlled by tapping just above the virtual joysticks on either side of the screen. This setup works rather well, however occasionally I found my left or right thumb sliding out of the joystick area and into the camera area, which could put one in a tight spot while shooting down enemies, but this is nothing game-breaking or anything that hinders the gameplay and you will eventually get used to the positions.
Thrown in with the standard dual stick missions are a few on-rails shooters, a few first person and a few top-down. The controls for the first person missions are simple, swipe the screen to aim and tap either side to shoot. The top-down missions work well, while your left joystick remains, your right stick is changed into a button to shoot. If the variety of missions are enough for you, how about getting some boss fights in the mix. The boss fights are very well done in Death Cop, which I won?t spoil for you here.
While the missions are well designed and fun to play, one thing that might bug players is the fact that there are no mid-mission checkpoints. So if you die in the middle of a mission, you have to start all over, no matter how far you are into the mission, which can get rather frustrating.
There are a total of 11 weapons in Death Cop and you will need to unlock them throughout the game. Weapons have different power levels and characteristics spread out in a nice shooter game staple variety like shotgun, rocket launcher, flamethrower, electric cannon and more. Mechs too offer variety: there are three playable Mechs, each with different stats and AI package. For a shooter game, these weapons and Mechs add ton of replay value to the gameplay.
The graphics for Death Cop are in 3D and they look great. The environment, Mech units and enemy units are well rendered, and special effects for weapons and units are well done. Explosions, firefight scenes and burning mechs all look quite real. There is a nice variety of enemy unit and weapon designs that keep the gameplay interesting and some times surprising. Controls are smooth.
Sound effects and music tracks are also very well done. Most of the missions have a steady rock riff on in the background, which gives a nice, action feel to the game, and it doesn't get too annoying or repetitive. However, it appears there is no option for iPod music.
For fans of action games and Dual Stick shooters, Death Cop: Mechanical Unit is a must-have, and is an easy recommendation for all who are looking for a solid, action-packed shooter. You won?t find the wide variety of shooter gameplay in a single game elsewhere.

Graphics: - 4 - 3D graphics are great, but nothing extronary. Sound: - 4 - Good sound tracks enhance the gameplay experience. Controls: - 4.5 - Controls work extremely well, though the first person shooter mission controls could be tighter. Gameplay: - 5 - Gameplay is awesome, with three playable mechs, 11 unlockable weapons, 16 missions, destructible environments and great action makes for a great gameplay experience.
Playing Hints and Tips:
-When being ambushed by enemies, always keep moving, remember: a moving target is harder to hit than a still one.
