iPhone Game Review: Spider-Man: Total Mayhem Reviewed by SpaZtrigger
Spider-Man: Total Mayhem brings Spider-Man in a new journey filled with old nemesis and loads of butt kicking. You will of course swing from skyscrapers, perform tricky combo attacks, compete against the clock in time events, and use Spidey's special sense for some cool counter attacks. But is Total Mayhem worthy its Spider-Man's roots and theme? Hell, yeah!
In Spider-Man: Total Mayhem you have one very long story game mode. The story doesn't follow the usual Spider-Man path, rather overloads the villains and in turn overload the action. In story mode Spider-Man discovers that all, yes ALL, the Super Villains that Spider-Man captured has escaped (through mysterious reasons) and Spider-Man has to now go on a journey to re-capture all the super villains and restore peace in the fair city. In Spider-Man: Total Mayhem you?re all brawl and you'll need all the help you need. That's where Spider-Man's spidey sense tingles. What the Spidey sense does is tell you when you?re going to get hit by an attack and shows an icon (you can tap to dodge this) that allows you counter attack the enemy that targets you. This super hero trick mean it's pretty hard to lose life in this game. And being a Super Hero, Spider-Man likes to use some of his awesome Super Powers, which include climbing walls, shooting webs at enemies, and of course swinging from rooftops to side of building. In addition to the usual Spider-Man moves, you will also get a super move that?s so powerful that it can kill a bunch of enemies at once.
Swinging on webs and beating bad guys is pretty awesome except for the fact that the web goes to the nearest bad guy which is bad in a very weird way. In one part of the game, you have to chase The Rhino and Rhino's lackeys will try to stop you every bit of the way. While your chasing him you'll need to swing on some skyscrapers. In order to do that you need to jump off a building and press the web button. Instead of the web attaching to the skyscraper, it automatically goes to the bad guy forcing you to fight them and also forcing you to let Rhino escape. After you grab and beat the enemy in midair you do the natural thing and fall. Don't worry, though Spider-Man: Total Mayhem allows you to use survive a pit fall, in this case a skyscraper fall, by following a simple set of swipes. By the time you manage to beat the bad guys, you find out that The Rhino escaped. One other thing you can do in this game is upgrade Spider-Man.
Fighting Super Villains and their minions have its reward: Spidey gets some upgrades, making him more power than ever. When you kill enemies you can collect the red orbs and when you collect enough of them, you can upgrade Spider-Man?s power, and special attack. As you deep into the game, fights get tougher and more epic, and the upgrades make the gameplay balanced, refreshing and rewarding.
Like with many Gameloft titles, the graphics in Spider-Man has very high quality graphics that put the game in the AAA game category. The graphics are sharp and smooth, and especially if you have a Retina display device, the game looks like shrank down version of a console game. Environment has amazing amount of detail for a mobile game and special FX looks spectacular. Character control and fighting moves are surprisingly simple and smooth in a game where controls can make or break a game. You get a brief intro to the controls: joystick on the left and three action buttons on the right. You will get used to the controls very quickly after a few moves and fights, and there are no glitches either.
Spider-Man: Total Mayhem doesn?t forget its fan base in the sound department. Yes, you will get the Spider-Man theme music. And since this is a game all about brawl, you'll also hear some suspenseful and dramatic tunes. The sound tracks have high quality and are well arranged to match the action in the gameplay. But if you have your own sound tracks mixed and ready for the awesome actions in Spider-Man, play them by all means. The game gives you an option to play your own iPod music.
With 12 massive levels and boss fights, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem is a worth the trip. And if you are a Spidey faithful, then fighting Rhino, Sandman, Electro, Venom, Green Goblin and Dr Octopus all in a single game is the best trip you will ever take. And you get great graphics and sound tracks along the way. For action gamers, Spider-Man: Total Mayham is a must play title.
