Video review: Motorola FlipOut Android phone with a twist on AT&T
      #38875 - 10/19/10 09:12 PM

Motorola continues to "design different", at least when it comes to mid-range Android phones. If the Motorola BackFlip wasn't funky enough for you, then the square Motorola FlipOut might just flip your trigger.

Think of the FlipOut as a Motorola Charm that's been cut in two, then joined at the swivel hinge. They share much in common, including similar hardware QWERTY keyboards (good ones, at that), a QVGA display that's sharp enough but has jaggy fonts, MOTOBLUR software and a 3 megapixel camera. There's an on-board GPS that works with Google Maps and Navigation as well as AT&T Navigator. The hardware isn't bad for $79 with a 2 year contract. Build quality is solid and the capacitive multi-touch display is responsive.

While the demands of MOTOBLUR have slowed down less bright hardware, the FlipOut's 720MHz Texas Instruments CPU really keeps up, and we're pleased with this Moto's speed. Data isn't a standout: yes the phone has 3G HSDPA, but the slower 3.6Mbps spec. The phone runs Android OS 2.1 Eclair and like all AT&T Android phones, non-market apps are a no-go.

Here's our video review to tide you over until we publish our full written review. Feel free to post questions about this unusual little smartphone.
