iPhone Game Review: Age of Zombies
Reviewed by ninjackid

When the average iOS gamer hears the words "zombies" and "dual-stick shooter" together in the same sentence, their mind probably goes straight to thinking it's your average mediocre game with dual-sticks and ridiculous weapons and equally ridiculous mindless enemies. But if you're like me and want a fresh change of pace from all these, you are in for a real treat.

Gameplay

In Age of Zombies, you play as Barry Steakfries, who makes his way to evil Professor Brain's lab, and finds that the evil doctor has unleashed zombies all over the ages of time. So our stylish-hairdo'd hero makes his way into the portal to the past to blow the zombies into oblivion.

The game features two game modes, the main story mode with 5 worlds (Prehistoric, The 1930's, Ancient Egypt, Feudal Japan and finally The Future) with various levels in each world and a survival mode. The gameplay for dual stick shooters is rather hard to describe because they all generally play the same way, but Age of Zombies just hits the nail right on the head when it comes to dual-stick action. You'll be dodging hordes (and I'm not over exaggerating when I say 'hordes' believe me) and hordes of zombies, picking up weapons, and boy are there a lot of those. Ranging from SMG's, shotguns to flamethrowers, landmines and bazookas.

Zombies pour out from time portals that pop up more and more often as the levels progress to surround you, and you'll need to keep on your toes constantly if you hope to have even a chance to survive. And if this doesn't sound awesome enough, at the end of each of the game?s worlds, a pretty tough boss will come onto the screen to wreck more brain-eating destruction. This game is for those who crave non-stop actions and have the guts and steady hands to survive them too.

Controlling Barry is your average twin stick setup with the left stick to move and the right one to fire, and a button to launch grenades. And unlike other dual-stick shooters, where you are given three hearts that disappear every time an enemy touches you, the health system works more like a FPS on the iOS, with the screen's edges getting redder and redder to indicate how much damage Barry is taking, and if you manage to blast away all the zombies around you and stay away from them, your health will regenerate.

Graphics

The graphics look extremely good. Fun and colorful pixel art design is reminiscent of classic shooters such as Metal Slug with all the sharp edges intact. The zombies and different maps work well together such as Cavemen Zombies in the Prehistoric map, etc. and are well detailed. You will enjoy stealing a look or two during the hectic shooting at the awesome environment and even the zombies who while deadly look quite cute.

Sound

The soundtrack is yet another area where Age of Zombies hits the mark perfectly. A rocking music track is just the thing you need when you are blasting away incoming swarms of zombies, and the music is composed to match and compliment each map. Sound FX and voice-overs also are very well designed. The entire audio package changes for each level which not only matches the level design but adds lots of fun and amusing bits to the game. For example, when in the Prehistoric map as Barry picks up a shotgun a low, grumbling caveman voice says "Shotgun", whereas in the future, it's a metallic, robotic voice. Well done, Halfbrick!

Conclusion

Age of Zombies is a well-polished, action-packed example of how a zombie shooter should be and proves that just because zombies and dual-stick shooters are rampant in the App Store, it doesn't mean that a good one can't be fun! This is a really fun experience and is a must-have for fans of dual-stick shooters and/or action games.
