Looks like Amazon isn't alone enjoying the book in eBook and eReader sales. Kobo Books said that over a million folks have connected to www.kobobooks.com since Christmas eve. Not only that, but they activated hundreds of thousands of devices since then too.
For those of you who don't know them yet, Kobobooks.com sells ePub format eBooks that are compatible with most eReaders except the Amazon Kindle. They have apps for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Android, the Palm Pre and desktops. Their line of Kobo Readers are sold at Borders (who owns a stake in Kobo) and at other locations.
Kobo?s holiday growth also included: ? Total registered users nearly doubling from the six weeks prior ? A 50X increase in purchases from previous Holiday weekend last year ? A 5X increase in purchases from the previous biggest weekend (also in December) ? Customer purchases from over 130 countries, with some of the biggest gains outside of US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, occurring in Germany, Netherlands, and Singapore ? A significant increase in device mix, with eReaders and Tablets accounting for the largest percent in sales
The top 3 bestselling eBooks in the US were: 1. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson 2. The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson 3. The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
We've yet to hear from Barnes & Noble about their holiday sales, but given how slow their website and account management features were this past weekend, we assume they were suffering/enjoying a very heavy customer load.
