Hands on with the Motorola Xoom Android OS 3.0 tablet on Verizon
      #39608 - 01/06/11 06:11 PM

We got to spend some quality time with the Motorola Xoom 10.1" tablet running Android OS 3.0 Honeycomb. The tablet is surprisingly light and in fact feels lighter than the iPad without coming off as cheap. The large capacitive multi-touch display is perfect for 720p video and we saw lots of it because Moto mainly ran through simulations using videos playing on the device, rather than actually putting the OS and apps through their paces.

The dual core 1GHz tablet will ship first with 3G EV-DO and WiFi, with an update coming later for 4G LTE. Since LTE requires different hardware, we're not sure how this can be accomplished with a software or firmware update unless the hardware is indeed present minus required 4G software.

No word yet on whether there will be contract subsidized pricing vs. a retail pricing model like the Galaxy Tab. The 3G version will be out in Q1 (we're told quite soon) and the 4G version will be out in Q2. For those who find the Galaxy Tab's 7" display and lack of the tablet-optimized Honeycomb OS less than enticing, Moto is calling you.
