Hands on video of the Hanvon color E-Ink ebook reader with touch screen
      #39638 - 01/09/11 03:56 PM

No, it's not shipping yet in China (Hanvon's home market) or the US, but it will be some day. The Hanvon color E-Ink ebook reader is a large format ereader with a color E-Ink display and capacitive touch (Hanvon developed the capacitive technology coupled with E-Ink themselves). It works well, and the color display reminds us of early color BlackBerry smartphones-- the color isn't very rich and the display is very matte.

The Hanvon runs on a Freescale CPU and we'd say they need to do some tweaking to improve speed. The ebook reader does more than books: it does PDFs, has note-taking and annotation, an image viewer and PIM utilities. It also speaks at least 6 languages-- nice for you polyglots and unicode fanatics. It's particularly well-suited to PDF viewing given color and the large display (no reflow when zooming though) and comic book/Manga viewing. Hanvon makes ereaders primarily for the business market in China, and they're considering targeting the same market in the US. As we've learned from poor IREX, the US market is dominated by affordable mass market consumer ereaders, so we're not sure how well that will go.

Here's the video:
