Android now number 1 in marketshare, Windows Phone 7 starts slow
      #39847 - 01/31/11 04:10 PM

According to the research firm NPD, mighty iOS is now second in marketshare, and Android has taken the lead in US sales in Q4 2010. Android gained 9 percent from Q3 to Q4 2010, and now comprises 53 percent of the US consumer smartphone market.

Windows Phone 7 grabbed just 2 percent, though to be fair, the totally new platform only launched in Q4 and it's only available on 2 out of the big 4 US carriers. Windows Phone 7 is tied with webOS for marketshare, according to NPD.

US Smartphone OS marketshare sales in Q4 2010:

1. Android 53%
2. Apple iOS 19%
3. RIM 19%
4. Windows Mobile (the old OS) 4%
Windows Phone 7 and Palm/HP webOS each have 2%

Top Five Handset Models Were All Smartphones in Q4 2010

Based on U.S. consumer purchases of mobile phones in Q4 2010, for the first time there were no feature-phone handsets in NPD's top five ranking. All top-selling mobile phone models were smartphones, as follows:

1. Apple iPhone 4
2. Motorola Droid X
4. Apple iPhone 3GS
5. Motorola Droid 2

The iPhone 4 is still the top selling handset, and it will be interesting to see if iOS takes the lead again once the phone is available on Verizon in the coming weeks.
